“Thank you,” I’d told him. “It’s good to have your blessing.”
Now, if Doc will just understand...well, I tell myself, I’ll know soon.
Alfie, Snowball, and I climb aboard Broom Hilda and set out for the town. In a minute or two, we’re landing on the steps. Val, who already knew we’d be home today, rushes down the library steps toward us. “Suzy!” he shouts as he comes toward us. “It’s so good to see you. You can’t imagine how much I missed you.” He turns to Alfie and Snowball. “You two, also. Somehow my life doesn’t seem complete when you’re not here.”
“I missed you too. Something terrible,” I tell him.
He leans toward me and gives me a quick kiss. What is this! I think and grab him around the shoulders, lean forward, and place a proper kind of kiss on the man I’ve fallen in love with. Yes, I love him; there’s no denying it. Who would have thunk it! Suzy Maycomber in love with a vampire!
We break the embrace and Val tries to catch his breath. Then he laughs. “Guess you missed me too,” he says.
“Oooo, mush time. Mush time,” Snowball calls out and buries her face in her paws.
I glance at Snowball and roll my eyes. Then I turn back to Val. “I missed you maybe just a little,” I answer. “Or maybe a lot!” Am I imagining it, or did Broom Hilda’s brush really develop a rosy color? A broom…embarrassed. Naww, that couldn’t possibly happen. I tell myself.
“Come on,” Val says, “everybody’s waiting inside to welcome you home.”
“How nice to see all of you,” Sprout says, holding out his hands as he hurries toward us. He grasps both my wrists, looks into my eyes, and smiles. He holds out his hand to Alfie, and they shake, both a little choked up. Finally, Sprout bends down and scratches behind Snowball’s ears. She arches her back and purrs.
Next, Doc walks toward me. Uh-oh, how do I explain what I did…
“So good to have you back. This time to stay, I hope,” the handsome elf says.
“I promise never to leave again…except maybe for short visits.”
“Good,” Doc answers.
“You’re not upset that I ditched school permanently?”
“From what I hear, Spell Masters don’t need all that schooling!”
I feel like a weight’s been lifted off my shoulders. “I was worried you’d be mad at me.”
“Heaven’s no. You being here is much better than having you off at school in Hemlock.”
“And now,” Sprout says, “someone else would like to welcome you home.”
I see he’s holding Granny’s cup. I glance inside and see her smiling up at me. “Welcome home, Suzy,” she says.
“Thank you. It’s wonderful to see you.”
“I was hoping—now that you’re back to stay—that we’d have the chance to know each other better.”
“I’d like that very much,” I say.
She laughs. “Now maybe I won’t sleep so much.”
“And you can teach me how to be a more accomplished witch.”
“Seems to me, you’re pretty accomplished already. But I’ll certainly be glad to help you however I—”
Suddenly the front door bursts open and crashes against the wall. Joe rushes up to us. “There’s been a murder!”
“A murder!” I ask. “Who?”
Joe’s eyes fill with moisture. “A member of the werewolf pack.”
“Which member?” I ask, my heart pounding.
He looks me in the eye. “You remember him, I’m sure,” Joe says. “His name was Ted.”
My heart sinks with sadness. Of course, I remember him.
I look around for Snowball and catch her eye. Here we go again.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Growing up, Lori Woods secretly hoped she’d turn into a witch when she’d become twenty one.
Unfortunately, that didn’t happen. So much for saving all those broomsticks! However, Lori decided that she’d pour all her wishes for paranormal mystery and adventure into her books, and live vicariously through her characters instead.
