“Mitchell, I’m gonna blow.” He tried to pull out but I grabbed his ass and forced him to stay put. I looked up and met his eyes. He was glowing with all the Christmas light behind him. It was just a couple thrusts before the first streams of cum went down my throat and Alex cried out as the climax ripped through his body. He held on to my head and I held him tight at the hips so he wouldn’t fall over.
As he slowed down, I ran my tongue over his still rigid pole, cleaning it up ever so gently. When I finally let it go, I grabbed his hands and pulled him down to the floor with me so that he fell on top of me.
“Alex, that was amazing.” I hugged him tight and felt him still shaking from his release.
“Your mouth was incredible,” he said.
“I think it was your cock that was incredible. I was just along for the ride.” He kissed me deep. “I’m glad we’ve got all week to do a lot more of that.”
“We need to get you out of these clothes,” he said. “I’ve waited for years to see you naked.” He pulled me to a sitting position and pulled my sweater and t-shirt over my head, tossing them over his shoulder. They landed right next to his sweater. “Let’s get you up for a second.”
Alex stood and pulled me up. He unbuttoned, unzipped, and pulled off my jeans and briefs faster than I thought possible. “Look at these legs, so strong.” He kneeled down, ran his hands over my legs. “So hot. And look at this.” He grabbed my cock in his fist and lightly stroked it. I was so turned on from working on him I was close to blowing myself. I grunted as he stroked me while his tongue darted over my balls.
“Feel so good.”
“I need this. Right now.” He left me there, confused again. He darted away, towards his bedroom. He looked hot scampering through the apartment, clad only in my jacket with a still mostly hard dick bouncing in front of him. Before I could follow him, he was back with a strip of condoms and lube. “Okay, mister big shot center,” he took a pause and kissed me. “Let’s see what this stick can do.”
I had no idea he could look like this. His green eyes were lit up with lust. I shuddered seeing the smolder. He pushed me back until I was sitting against the couch. Ripping the condom package open with his teeth, he quickly rolled it over my cock and lubed me up. He straddled me, and reached behind me to put my cock exactly where he wanted it.
He teased his hole, coaxing my cock past the first ring of muscle. I cried out as the head slipped in. He felt so good. I couldn’t believe he was taking me just that quick. He stopped a moment, leaned down to kiss me. He flexed his hole, getting used to me. I pulsed in time with him, which made us both get more vocal as we kissed. Suddenly he drew himself upright and slid himself the rest of the way down. His balls were against my pubes and I was buried deep inside this man I’d fantasized so about for years.
Alex rode me, holding on to my shoulders. He sat down with force each time, getting me deeper in him. I was sure the neighbors were going to bang on the door to see what was going on because we got louder by the second. I closed my eyes and let the waves of pleasure cascade over me. Nothing had ever felt like this—nothing I’d done to myself and nothing anyone had ever done to me.
He leaned forward again and sucked on my nipple, bringing me out of my daze. I opened my eyes and looked at the top of his head. I hugged him and started thrusting, adding upward momentum to his downward thrusts.
“Oh yeah, Mitchell, that’s it. Right there.” It was more like a mumble as he spoke into my chest.
“Alex, I’m not going to last long if you don’t slow this down.”
His only response was to somehow get me even deeper into his tightness.
“Fuckin’ give it me, Mitchell. I want you to blow.”
“You got it.” I drove in harder. He sat up, which improved the angle.
“Yes, that’s it.”
“I love you, Alex.” I found the strength to pound him more. We were both in a frenzy, focused only on getting off. “I’m gonna come, Alex. Right now.”
I gripped his shoulders as I shuddered from the orgasm. Shot after shot filled the condom. I had to stop thrusting because the pleasure was overwhelming. He kept driving himself down on me, which forced his own orgasm to kick in. His cum shot onto my stomach, chest, and the couch, too. Alex rode me until my body went limp under him and the moans got quieter.
He collapsed into the gooey mess on my chest and I hugged him tight. It felt so right to have our two overheated bodies pressed together. I was still buried in him and that added to the afterglow.
“My god, Mitchell, that was amazing. Are you always that good?”
“I was about to ask you the same thing.” I kissed the top of his head. “Absolutely spectacular.”
We kissed gently for a while, until Alex finally grunted in between a couple kisses and tried to adjust himself.
“We can move to get you more comfortable, you know?” I said.
“But I like it here, lying on top of you, your cock still in me.” He gave me a quick kiss. “I’ve no idea how you’re still hard after all that.”
“Well, let’s see. I’ve got a hot man on top of me whose hard cock is pressing into my stomach. How could I not be?”
There was a rumbling in between us.
“Was that you or me?” Alex asked.
“I’m actually not sure.”
“I think it might be time to find some food.” Alex sat up and then stood up, sliding off my cock. He removed the jacket and tossed it on to the couch.
“It was so hot fucking you while you wore that,” I said as we headed towards a warm shower. “That exceeded any high school dream I had about you.”
“Mine, too. My favorite dream was fucking you in the locker room, you still in a jock strap.”
“We should try that one sometime,” I said as we stepped under the spray. “My go to was blowing you on your team bus after a game.”
“Fuck yeah.”
We soaped each other up and got clean before just standing under the spray and making out for a while.
“So I was checking at work,” Alex said, as we were toweling off. “The company that owns the paper also owns one in Oakland. I was thinking about putting in for a transfer.”
“Really? That would be awesome.” I kissed him.
“You don’t think this is too fast do you? It’s not like I’m going to come out there and just move in, but it would put us in the same area so we could actually date without having to use a plane.”
“I’m thrilled. Just one more great Christmas present.”

Given Trevor’s history, I was surprised to see him on the ice when Alex and I arrived at the rink at 5:30 Christmas morning. He skated around puck handling as we walked along the perimeter of the rink. I banged my stick against the glass so he knew we were here. He waved in acknowledgement and skated over to the exit so he could join us off ice while Alex and I got our skates on.
“Hey guys,” Trevor said. “Merry Christmas. Alex, good to see you again.”
“You, too,” he said. “Thanks for inviting me along.”
“I was surprised when I didn’t get a text about a morning skate since he usually tries to get me out here as soon as he’s home. I decided to take the initiative and invite you both. So how are you guys? I see there was an early gift exchange.”
Alex and I looked at each other confused for a moment before Alex registered what Trevor was talking about. The jacket. I’d told Trevor I was giving it to him and, despite the early hour, Trevor was already paying attention.
“Yeah,” Alex said. “Pretty cool, huh?” He grinned like it was the best gift he’d ever gotten.
“He might have cheated you a bit since he didn’t actually buy anything for that.” Trevor shot me a wink. I was okay with the ribbing in this case. It meant Trevor was already comfortable with Alex despite this being only their second interaction.
“Nah, I know there’s more,” Alex said. “There are two other presents under my tree. Besides, it doesn
t matter, he’s here and that’s gift enough.” He leaned against his head against my shoulder for a brief moment.
“So,” I said, taking over the conversation as I laced skates, “mom and dad got anything crazy planned for tonight?”
“It seems like a straight forward Christmas dinner. Mom and grandma were already up cooking when I came here. The tables are already set for nineteen. I made sure Alex is sitting between us, so he’s somewhat protected. More than anything they’re just excited you’re bringing someone for dinner. I think they’re more excited than when I brought Julie home during my birthday, which I might be a little upset about.”
“Do we get to see her, too?” I asked.
“No. We did our Christmas stuff a couple days ago. She went with her family to Chicago to see grandparents. She’s back before New Year’s, so we can all definitely do something.”
“So you think everyone will behave?” I looked to Trevor. I wanted some assurances this wasn’t a mistake to make the introduction like this.
“For dinner?”
I nodded.
“I’m sure there’ll be stories you’d wish wouldn’t be told. But is it a problem you’re introducing your boyfriend to everyone? Not that I’ve heard. I mean I was pretty heads down until a couple days ago with finals, but I haven’t seen or heard anything but excitement.”
“Cool.”
“You really worried about something?” Alex asked as he finished up his lacing.
“No. Just paranoid. I’ve never brought anyone home before.” I looked over to Alex, my lacing also complete. “Should we tell him?” I gestured towards Trevor.
“Sure,” Alex said without hesitation. “We can tell anyone and everyone.”
“Oh my god,” Trevor’s eyes got wide. “One of you is pregnant. I’m going to be an uncle.” He held a look of amazement, his mouth hung open until Alex dissolved into laughter, quickly followed by me and Trevor.
“He’s good,” Alex said, getting his laughs under control. “You’ll make a great teacher if you can entertain a class like that.”
“The setup was too perfect for me to not say that.” Trevor took a seat next to me so he wasn’t standing over us. “So what’s really up?”
“We’re going to give this thing a real go,” I said, taking Alex’s hand.
“You’re moving home?” Trevor said, excitedly.
“No, sorry. Alex is looking to take a job in the bay area though. That way we could date in person instead of through video or text.”
“That’s cool, though it’d be cooler if you moved back here,” Trevor said as he put an arm around my shoulders and hugged. “You gonna break that at dinner tonight?”
I looked to Alex. He’d told his parents what he was planning before I got into town. I wasn’t sure I wanted to bring it up in front of my whole family at once. “Maybe. We’ll see how it goes. I’ll definitely tell mom and dad while I’m here though. I mean, it’s not like he’s asked me to marry him, but it’s a pretty huge commitment to move across the country to date.”
“So what’re your intentions towards my brother?” Trevor asked, looking past me and over to Alex.
Alex looked at Trevor for a moment before shifting to put his gaze firmly on me. “To find out what I missed during high school, although without the drama of high school. See if there’s a future for us. If there is, and he’s game, then, yeah, get married.”
We stared into each other’s eyes. For a moment, the rink, Trevor and everything else fell away and it was just us. I nodded. “I like those intentions,” I said as we kept staring at each other.
“Me, too,” Trevor said quietly. He slapped my knee a couple times and I heard his skates cut across the ice as he left us alone.
“We should get out there,” I finally said, pulling my gaze away from Alex’s. “We don’t want to be late to your parents for breakfast.”
We hurriedly grabbed our gloves and sticks and hit the ice. Without a word between us, we headed across the ice, looking to strip the puck off Trevor. He saw what was coming and immediately went into a defensive mode, looking to hang on to it as long as he could.
Alex’s declaration replayed in my mind as we skated. It added to the wonderful things he’d already said last night. It’d been a great Christmas so far, with the promise of an even more amazing New Year.

Author’s Note
Rivals is the first m/m story I wrote that was published. It was the second contract I signed, but it was first into print so it holds a special place in my heart. It came out in the holiday season of 2009. I wrote it during a time when I was taking a break from the Hat Trick manuscript. If you’ve read Hat Trick, you can see some of the influences working on that book had on this story. There are other influences too, such as the collision Mitchell has with Alex, which is based on something that happened to me in a game.
It’s been fun coming back to Rivals for this reissue. The story is the same, but I took this opportunity to clean up some stylistic things I didn’t like. There are also two new scenes. I always regretted not giving Trevor, Mitchell’s brother, a bit more time since it was clear they had a tight relationship. I enjoyed developing that a bit further.
If you read the original, thank you for coming back to check out the new parts. If you’re new to the story, I hope you enjoy it!
Heat Wave: Tuscaloosa
This was my second summer in Tuscaloosa and I hated it. It was hot and steamy, and everything a Southern summer could be. Last year I caught the tail end of it, trying to get settled before starting year one of my master’s program. That was bad enough, but this summer was far worse. So far we’d spent July in a record heat wave with thirteen consecutive days over one hundred, and that didn’t count the humidity. The previous record was eleven days in 2007.
I’m from Seattle. Yes, it can get hot there, but not this hot and definitely not for this long. My original plan was to head back home to the cooler Pacific Northwest, and work on my thesis for the summer. But I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to become a teaching assistant for Dr. Robert Mayer. I admired his work in the field of journalism ethics and he was one of the reasons I came to the University of Alabama to do my graduate work. When his teaching assistant put her program on hold, my advisor recommended me for the position.
Staying in town to teach and write sounded like a good idea, until the heat wave hit. There were plenty of super-hot days the previous summer, but it never lasted more than two or three days before going back to merely unreasonably hot. These days it felt like an oven outside, and it was impossible to not dissolve into a sweaty mess the moment you walked out the door. Staying in the apartment wasn’t much better, as the air conditioner couldn’t keep up with the heat, unless you wanted your bills to be sky high, which I really couldn’t afford.
Instead, I tried to spend most of my time in the air conditioned areas of campus. Luckily the library, my office, and the classroom where I taught all had great air conditioning. Sadly I couldn’t sleep in any of these places.
A knock on my cubicle frame broke me out of my heat wave lament. I looked up from the papers on my desk to find Luke Rienhart from my freshman reporting class. Like the rest of the student body these past few weeks, he wore as little as possible. He stood there in shorts, a tank top and flip flops, which he wore in a very cute way. I kicked myself for thinking of a student like that, but what could I do? I had eyes and he was cute.
“Hey Luke, come on in,” I said.
“Hi Mr. Holden, sorry to barge in, but I wanted to talk to you about the assignment.”
“Sure,” I said. “And please, I’ve told you guys, call me Ethan. Have a seat.”
My office was barely bigger than a closet with walls going nearly up to the ceiling. Besides me and the desk, there was only room for a second chair and a bookcase, overloaded with the books I needed for teaching and research. There wasn’t much privacy as sound traveled easily between the thin walls, but
it got the job done.
“You wanted us to write about the heat and come up with different takes on it,” he said. “I was thinking of going off campus to talk with some people in the city who are below the poverty line, you know, the ones without air conditioning, to see how they’re coping.”
“Absolutely,” I said. “I’d love to see stories that don’t just have a campus perspective. I know that’s what’s easiest to get, but if you can get off campus, please do.”
“Cool,” he said, looking genuinely excited.
“Why were you hesitant to just do it?”
“Talking to a couple of the others in class made me doubt my idea.”
“You’ve got good instincts, Luke. I could tell that from your first few assignments. Don’t let others sway you. You’ll make mistakes sometimes, but you’ve got to find that out for yourself. If you let others dictate what you report, you might miss out on a key angle of the story. As for your classmates, I suspect they’re trying to keep you from one upping them.”
“Bastards,” he said, with a grin.
“You gotta watch out. There’ll always be people who don’t want to put in the work to do a great story, don’t let them talk you out of doing the job you think needs to be done.”
“Got it.” He was about to get up but instead pulled his phone from his shorts pocket. He clicked on the recorder app. “What about you? How are you coping with the heat?”
I liked that he was checking to see if I had a story. “Telling you I hate it just makes me sound like everyone else. It’s tough for me. Like most students, I’m on a budget and I’m trying not to run up my bills using the air conditioner so much. So I stay on campus as much as I can in these wonderfully air conditioned buildings. So for me, I guess, it’s a choice. I could run the A/C, but I just choose not to. A lot of folks don’t even have that choice.”
Luke nodded. “Got it. Mr. Hold…Ethan.” He pocketed his phone as he stood up. “Thanks for the pep talk.”
