He wandered across the tarmac into the terminal, raised a hand to the familiar pair of clerks, crossed the few feet of floor to the Military Police office where the service personnel were having their papers checked.
“Hawkins, George, sergeant. Just been promoted to captain and it still says lieutenant on me documents.”
The sergeant ticked his name off on the list that had been radioed down to them.
“Pass through, sir. There’s a truck waiting for you, sir. From your battalion, sir.”
That was good of them, George thought; arranging for transport could have been difficult otherwise, needing to get into town and then organise a vehicle at the garage.
The driver of a thirty hundredweight Ford came across and took his kitbag.
“Instructions to take you to the hospital, sir. Congratulations, sir!”
“Sorry?”
“A son, sir.”
“Bloody Hell! I lost track of the days up in the bush. Look, can we get hold of some flowers somehow?”
“In the back of the cab, sir. Compliments of the Mess.”
