Max clenched his jaw, crossed his arms and said, ‘Fine, but you only need to say the word, Wanda. Because I’m just itching to turn right now.’

Will snorted again. ‘You really are finding your level, aren’t you Wanda? Hanging out with weredogs, cleaning up rubbish.’ He gave me a pitiful gaze. ‘You could have done so much better for yourself. You could have been one of us. I wanted that, y’know. I wanted it more than anything in the world. But now …’ His lips formed into a cold smile. ‘Now I’m truly glad that you were only using me. Because I see you for what you are. I see that my father and my aunt are right. You’re beneath me. Especially now that I’m the head of the coven.’

  My mouth gaped stupidly.

‘Surprised?’ He smirked. ‘It’s just until my dad gets out. And he will get out. We’ve got some amazing lawyers in our coven. Oh, and while we’re on the subject of my father, I think it’s a good time to tell you the reason I went to the Minister. It was a deal, Wanda. I sold you out, just like you said. And I did it because she said that if I did, my dad’s sentence would be just about the shortest murder sentence in the history of Witchfield. It was a tough choice, I’ll grant you. I did have to think about it for all of three seconds. So there you go. There’s your explanation. I’ll bet you’re really glad that you asked.’

He backed away, grabbing his bike and wheeling it over to Little Miss Perky Nose. They got back up on the tandem together and, as they cycled past my bin, Mandy pulled a paper cup from the bike’s basket and tossed it at me. It was still half-full of milky coffee.

I didn’t know what to do or what to say. I just watched them cycling off together, and started to cry. Not pretty, girly tears. Snotty, sniffling tears that grossed out even me. Max came over, putting his arm around me, and Wolfie lapped up the coffee that was dripping off my coat and down onto the ground.

‘Don’t mind them,’ Max said softly. ‘You’re worth a hundred Will Berrys. And a million Mandy Parkers. We’ll finish up our work, okay? And then we’ll go straight to Riddler’s Cove. I bet if we ring your mam ahead of time, she might even have an apple tart waiting.’

I mustered up a grateful smile, and we got back to work.
