John worked on Monday while Lyndsey returned the tuxes to the store for the guys and took care of some things for Joanne and her mother. Joanne’s family had headed back to Tennessee early that morning.
They had dinner that evening with the staff from John’s office and flew home on Tuesday.
They’d been back a few days when Lyndsey decided it was time to reveal her secret.
She prepared a special dinner once again, with all of John’s favorite dishes. A bouquet of fall flowers graced the center of the dining room table with candles on either side. A fire was burning in the fireplace and she dressed in one of his favorite dresses. She was going all out on this one. It might be the most important announcement she would ever make.
It was finally time for him to come home, and she checked the roast one final time. Everything was ready to put on the table as soon as he came in and had time to chill out a bit after a long day at work.
“I’m home, something sure smells good in here,” he said as he walked in from the garage, through the utility room, and into the kitchen. “And somebody is all gussied up. What’s the occasion?”
“Oh, I just felt like pampering you a bit. You’ve been working so hard lately. Why don’t you go in the dining room and get comfortable? I’ll bring the food in a minute.”
“Are you sure you don’t want some help?” he asked.
“No, you go on.”
A few minutes later she carried the food in and set it on the table. They discussed his day over dinner and he mentioned their anniversary was coming up. “Would you like to go away for a weekend?” he asked.
“That sounds good. I’ll let you surprise me with the location, like you did for our honeymoon,” she replied.
“The food was delicious. Let me help you clear the table.” He jumped up and began stacking dishes.
“I’ll get the dessert while you’re doing that,” she said. She returned with slices of chocolate cake and coffee for him. She placed a glass of cold milk at her place.
“You’re not drinking coffee?” he asked when he came back in the room.
“Not tonight,” she said quietly.
“Are you sure you’re all right?” he asked, looking at her with a strange expression on his face.
“That all depends on what you consider to be all right. I’ve been keeping a secret for a few weeks now, a very big secret, but I had to wait until the time was right to reveal it. Don’t worry; it isn’t anything that’s going to upset you.”
“Another secret? Hmmmm,” he said.
“Oh, this is a good secret, I can assure you.”
“Okay, Lyndsey, you have my full attention. Spill it,” he said with a wicked grin. “I think I know, but I want to hear it from you.”
“Do you remember a few months ago when we decided I should take a break from my birth control due to some minor issues I was experiencing?”
“Of course I do. That’s when we decided not to use another method…oh my God. Lyndsey, this secret of yours…are you…are we?”
She nodded and smiled. “Yes, I am, and yes, we are. I couldn’t say anything sooner because I didn’t want to take away from Blake’s and Joanne’s big day. She and I even discussed starting families and it was all I could do to keep my mouth shut. I wanted to tell you first, and I wanted the timing to be absolutely perfect.”
He was kneeling next to her before she could say another word. He placed his face on her belly and then his hand. “Hey little guy or gal, this is your daddy.”
“You’re so silly,” she said with a laugh.
“We’ve got so much to talk about. When are we going to tell your family? We really should tell them before we tell anyone else.”
“I thought we’d invite them over for dinner soon and tell them together.”
“How are you feeling? Any morning sickness?” he asked.
“A little, but not bad,” she said. “Our first appointment is scheduled for next Monday.”
“I’ll clear my schedule.”
“John?” she asked.
“Yes, baby?”
“Are you happy about this secret?”
“I am ecstatic! I’ve always wanted to have a baby with you. When things got so rough a while back, I didn’t dare bring it up. I wanted to just tell you to forget the job and have a baby with me, but I knew you weren’t ready to hear that. I knew you had to find your niche first. When the doctor suggested a different method of birth control, and we made the decision not to use any, we both knew this could happen. We both hoped it would happen. And now it has. We’re turning the page on a new chapter in our lives.”
EPILOGUE
Three years had passed. Lyndsey had given birth to a healthy baby boy. The next year, Janis and Bryan were blessed with a precious baby girl. Jill and Jarrod added another son to their family. Blake and Joanne were expecting their first any day now.
John’s business had grown considerably, and it was all he and Blake could do to keep up.
Baine Condominiums was still going strong as well.
Of course, Maeve and Bob were still traveling, but their greatest joy was in their grandchildren.
They were a tight-knit group and they expected to enjoy many years of good times together.
Oh, and Joanne had landed one of the year’s biggest new authors as a client, and was happily reaping the benefits. The author’s name was Lynn Greene, and her first mainstream novel had just been picked up by one of the Big Five, thanks to her talented writing skills and her brilliant agent. Lynn’s publisher bought out Darwood Publishing six months later. Once again, her life was in perfect balance.
