‘Of course you do.’ Daisy had laughed through her tears and hugged her mother close. ‘I love you, Mother.’
‘Oh. Oh.’ The two women had been choked up, those very precious words never having been expressed between them before. ‘Well. Well, then.’ Speech had been difficult for a moment and when Cecilia had looked at her, she’d shaken her head. ‘Daisy, you’ll need to redo your make-up if you don’t start to control those tear ducts.’
Daisy knew that haughtiness was a front for feeling uncomfortable and she laughed once more. ‘Then I’ll redo it. Moments like this don’t happen every day.’
And neither did standing beneath the marquee with the man of her dreams looking at her as though she were the most precious, most wonderful, most incredible person in the world. What she’d done to deserve a man like Oscar, she had no clue, but there was no way she was going to let him go now. She knew he missed his life in Meeraji Lake and so did she. After all, it really was their home.
Now, as they stood before the celebrant, they held hands and looked into each other’s eyes. ‘There are so many things I want to say to you,’ Oscar began. ‘But I’ve realised that I have the rest of my life to say them, to show you how incredibly happy you’ve made me. I never thought I’d find love again but I was wrong. For a long time, I wasn’t sure if you were Major Daisy, Dr Daisy or Lady Daisy, but now I know, with one hundred per cent clarity, exactly who you are—you’re my Daisy and I promise to love you forever. Work beside me. Walk beside me. Communicate with me. Laugh with me. Cry with me. Listen with me…and I promise to do the same, with all my heart.’
Daisy’s lower lip had started to wobble as he’d spoken and she sniffed and quickly looked at her mother. ‘I may need to redo my make-up yet again.’ They all laughed but then she turned her full attention to the man before her, her heart swelling with a love she’d never known possible but was more than happy to accept.
‘Oscar.’ She gave his hands a little squeeze and he immediately smiled at her. ‘I love you.’ She paused. ‘It really is that simple. I love you and I have never loved anyone until you. Because of you, I can now love others.’ She smiled at her mother and then at Scotty and Tori, so pleased their two friends had been able to travel to Spain to be here for their special day. ‘You have given me so much and I want nothing more than to make you happy. Thank you for saving me.’
Oscar gathered her close. ‘It has been my absolute pleasure.’ Then he kissed her, even though they weren’t really up to that part in the ceremony yet. No one seemed to mind, though. This was their day and they could do whatever they wanted.
