I nodded, and that was all the permission that John needed. He pulled me to him and captured my mouth with his, kissing me hard, like a starving man faced with his first meal. My body reacted to him, and I pressed forward. My hand touched his chest, and I could feel his heartbeat. Remington’s heartbeat. But I refused to think about that. For now, he was mine, and I was happy.

We kissed for a long time, and then we walked slowly up the cobblestone road, side-by-side with John’s arm wrapped around my waist. Nothing in the world could have upset this moment. I relished the knowledge that we would soon be together at the kitchen table, eating cinnamon toast together, just as we should be. Every simple moment with him made me happy.

Their faces gave away everything. They were distraught. More than distraught…despairing. My heart dropped, knowing that something truly horrible had happened.

“What is it?” I asked, breathless with dread.

“They’re coming,” Auntie Ida said. “The coven is coming.”

I felt someone watching me, and I pulled away from John and turned around. There, at the end of the cobblestone road was Bob Hayashi. He was watching us.

His eyes glowed red, and he smiled.
