His Human Mate (Captives of the Dominars Book 3) Page 17

by Stella Rising

“The world was told the two of you were dead,” Avyria begins. “Why the deception?”

“To catch our would-be killers,” Tamrys replies. He launches into an explanation of how we survived and how the ruse encouraged Captain Reynolds to reveal himself. “Due to this, we were able to apprehend him. Unlike the Tucson AAB, he will be incarcerated for a long time.”

  “Here on Earth?” Avyria asks.

  “No.”

The host gives the pronouncement a moment to sink in, then turns to me. “Ms. Marchessault, how did you feel after the attack?”

The crowd quiets down, eager to hear from a human, I assume. Do they believe that I’m here of my own free will, speaking my mind with complete honesty? I’m not sure. All I can do is tell the truth and hope they accept it.

“I was pissed off, of course. It led to thoughts that I’ve come to regret. But, since that day I’ve realized that the road to peace is easier to walk when you have someone who cares about you at your side.”

I hold my hand out for Tamrys to take, which he does—though not without activating a small egg-shaped device in my core, giving me a quick surge of stimulation. Thankfully, I kind of expected him to do that, and don’t let it rattle me.

“We need to be partners,” I continue, after clearing my throat. “However you want to interpret that—as long as humans and Dominars are working together, we can make peace. I believed that when I worked for the U.N. and conflict was between different nations; I believe the divides between species can be bridged as well. And I’m confident that’s what the Dominars are here to do.”

Avyria gives the audience time to applaud politely, then asks, “Why do you think people should trust the Dominars like you do? If you were on the outside, looking in, wouldn’t you be skeptical?”

“Absolutely. I’ve dealt with lots of would-be dictators and conquerors who couldn’t be trusted, so I understand being wary of friendly invaders. If ever I have a reason to doubt the Dominars’ intentions, I will be the first to sound the alarm. As for why people should trust them, all I can say is that I trust Consuls Tamrys and Forta. They’ve protected me from harm and are working each day to bring peace to Earth. Hopefully, in time, you’ll see in them what I see.”

Without reacting to my comment, Avyria turns to Tamrys. “Consul, anything you would add?”

“Yes, thank you,” Tamrys begins. “From the time I’ve spent with Sabine Marchessault, I’ve seen that she’s one of the smartest and most dedicated people on the planet. She gives me hope that the Dominars’ mission to Earth will succeed, that humans will make great partners with the Dominars as we grow more fond of one another. It’s my hope that the relationship between Sabine and I can be a living symbol of the future humans and Dominars will all someday share.”

“Thank you, Executive Consul Tamrys and Sabine Marchessault,” says Avyria. “We look forward to hearing more from both of you in the future.”

“Anytime,” Tamrys replies as I nod.

“That’s our forum for this week,” Avyria continues, looking out into the audience. “We’ll be back next week. Thank you for joining us.”

The crowd cheers, looking not at Avyria but Tamrys and me. A tear drops down my cheek as we wave goodbye to the audience, but then Tamrys is dragging me back to our shuttle so fast I have to run to keep up.

“What’s the hurry?” I ask, my heels clipping against the stone floors of the Beacon.

Tamrys stops on a dime, causing me to collide with him; he’s ready though, catching me in his arms and holding me close. “Why waste time, pet? There’s so much for us to do!” he asks, picking me up to carry me back to our shuttle.

I laugh, enjoying the feel of his arms beneath me, keeping me high enough aloft that I can look into his eyes with a smile on my face. “Actually, I was hoping we might take the scenic route back to New York.”

  “Through space?” says Tamrys.

  “Over the Pacific.”

He smirks, pinching my bottom. “You want to go around the world with me, huh?”

“I do, sir. Around the world, around the galaxy… I want to go everywhere with you.”

Tamrys kisses my cheek. “Everywhere sounds good to me.”

He carries me until our shuttle soars over the ocean. Watching the water sparkle beneath us, I sigh contentedly, knowing our journey has only just begun.
