Slain looked away again but not before Hannah caught the sadness that filled his dark eyes.
He turned after several silent moments and continued. “She asked for a kiss from her husband.”
He grew silent again and Hannah fought to keep tears from falling.
“Her lips were soft and warm and she smiled afterwards and told me I was a good husband. She died that night in my arms. Astrid is buried here on MacKewan land. Helice preferred that no one knew. It was enough for her that her daughter died a free woman. I granted her request and I ask you do the same.”
Hannah jumped up and threw herself at her husband, hugging him tight and letting her tears fall. She sniffed them back when she raised her head. “You are no savage, husband, you have the kindest heart of all.”
“And it belongs to you now and always,” he said and was about to kiss her when she kissed his lips quickly and stepped away from him, shedding her garments as fast as she could. “Eager to have your way with me, wife?” he asked with a soft laugh, that brought a deep joy to his heart that he had not felt in a long time.
“Eager to have you plant our first bairn, one of many to come, in me so that Helice and my da will have grandchildren to fuss over and Conlan will have family to fight with, and we will have a home filled with love, laughter, joy… with family.
Slain scooped her up in his arms. “I do love you, wife.”
She nibbled at his ear and whispered, “Show me how much.”
And Slain did.

About the Author
It was her love of reading and daydreaming that started USA Today bestselling author Donna Fletcher’s writing career. Besides gobbling up books, her mom generously bought for her, she spent a good portion of her time lost in daydreams that took her on grand adventures.
