A temporary reunion…
Newly jobless and adrift, former investment banker Kerri Wilson travels to Virginia to see her best friend and regroup, only to run into billionaire playboy Ethan Lloyd. It’s been years since she’s snuck out of his bed after the most amazing sex of her life, and he’s so not her type—she likes them tall, dark and manageable. But he’s too hot to resist, and she succumbs to another sizzling, no-strings-attached (or so she thinks) night.
Unwilling to let her go this time, Ethan makes a simple proposition: a job, a place to stay, and an exclusive affair that will end when either of them finds someone else. But with her dark, painful past catching up to her, Kerri may have to bolt again—even though her heart is telling her to stay. And Ethan’s not giving her up without fighting to make their “temporary” arrangement something far more permanent…

Chapter One
At twelve thirty on a gray and rainy day, Natalie Hall slipped inside an elegant little bistro near her office in Tysons Corner…and almost slipped back out when she saw her mother Louise seated at a table. If it hadn’t been for her godmother Emily Rodale waving at her with a big grin, she might still have left.
Pasting on a smile in response, Natalie marched toward both women. Petite blondes with slim bones and beautiful faces, Louise and Emily could have passed for sisters. There was nothing alike about their personalities, but somehow they managed to be best friends.
Louise sipped her coffee, while Emily got up and gave Natalie hugs and an air kiss. Natalie squeezed hard before letting go and taking a seat.
“How did your doctor’s appointment go?” Emily asked. “I hope you aren’t sick?”
“Just a routine follow-up to something simple.” Stress and a lack of sleep; the usual election year problems. “But thanks, Emily.”
“Oh, splendid,” Louise said distractedly. Her voice was as coolly polished as usual—the perfect voice for a politician’s wife.
“Have you had lunch?” Emily asked.
“I grabbed a bite near the clinic,” Natalie lied. She didn’t want to eat with her mother. “And I’ve got a meeting soon. Missing the morning tends to make my afternoons busy.”
“Then I’ll get straight to the point,” Louise said.
“Louise,” Emily said, putting a hand on her friend’s wrist. “Come on.”
“Please. This is important.” Ignoring Emily’s sigh, Louise turned to Natalie. “You remember Marcus O’Dell?”
Natalie’s gut twisted at the mention of her ex. “Yes.”
“It would be nice if you could…well, reconcile with him.”
She choked. “Reconcile with him? He’s married.” He’d proposed to another woman within a month of breaking up with Natalie. Jerk.
“I’m not saying you should date him. Home wrecking wouldn’t be helpful to your father’s campaign. But you can be friends, can’t you?”
“Definitely not!” she said, her hands tightening into fists.
“He’s from an influential family, Natalie dear, and they all cast a vote. I want his family’s unconditional support, not to mention his new in-laws.”
She closed her eyes. “I’m not schmoozing him for votes.”
“Now dear. It’s not for votes. It’s for your father.”
Natalie gritted her teeth. “Yes, well, I have a busy career, and Marcus and I didn’t exactly part on great terms.” Not to mention how humiliating it would be to weasel votes and endorsements from her ex…much less the woman he’d married. And it wasn’t even necessary; her father had plenty of both already.
“It’s an election year, and you know your duties. Worried about your career?” Louise ticked the points off on her fingers. “You work for a defense contractor. Your father’s a United States senator. And his reelection matters. Why don’t you think on that?”
“I do think about that. A lot.” She never forgot the fact that she couldn’t do whatever she wanted because she had to be perfect, in case her bad behavior hurt her father’s political aspirations. “Excuse me. I need to get going if I’m to make my meeting.” Dragging in a shuddering breath, she got up and walked out.
As she emerged from the bistro, a gentle hand gripped her elbow. She turned and saw Emily.
“I’m sorry, dear,” the older woman said. “I had no idea Louise was going to spring that on you.” Emily sighed, her eyebrows tight with irritation. “Don’t let your mother railroad you into something you don’t want to do. I never liked Marcus anyway. Honestly, if your father can’t win because of a handful of votes, maybe he should think about retiring.”
Natalie smiled. “Thank you.”
“Now you go have a good day, all right?” Emily patted her hand and returned to the bistro.
Natalie drove to her office. Deep breaths, she thought. Calm.
It didn’t really work, but she reined herself in. Her coworkers didn’t deserve her bad temper.
Fifteen minutes later, Natalie stepped out onto the muted beige carpet on the fifteenth floor of a tall office building. Normally the sunlight gave the office a hazy radiance through frosted glass walls. But not today. Everything looked drab and gray from the rain. How fitting.
As she made her way to her office, she had the feeling that people were staring at her like she was on her way to the guillotine. Then the mail guy actually said, “Sorry, Natalie. Better luck next time,” and hustled down the corridor before she could respond.
What was that about?
She glanced around, but couldn’t make eye con
tact with anyone. Was she being let go? But why? She was one of the best analysts at Damon Defense Engineering, and the company was doing great financially.
As she entered her office, her assistant, Danielle Hartman, scurried toward her. Danielle’s dirty dishwater-colored pantsuit did nothing for her eyes, hidden behind a pair of thick glasses, or her limp brown hair. Most high school outcasts grew out of their social awkwardness and improved their sense of fashion by the time they finished college. Danielle hadn’t. Which was unfortunate, because she had great skin and a nice smile, not to mention a good head on her shoulders.
“Oh my god,” Danielle said. “You have to go now.”
“Where?”
“Ralph’s office.”
“Oh, that. I know. I called the meeting.” Natalie set up her computer. “It’s not for another ten minutes.”
“No no no, he’s fired. Alex Damon himself is here. And he’s been wanting to see you since eight thirty.”
Natalie stood still for a moment as her mind blanked. Everything made sense now.
She forced a bland smile, the kind she pasted on her face when a reporter asked a question about her father’s politics. Head held high, she marched to Ralph’s old office. If she was getting canned, she was going to go with dignity.
The door to the office was open, but Ralph’s name plaque was gone. Years of wear and tear had left the ivory walls slightly dingy, except for a couple of pristine squares where he’d hung framed Picasso prints. The office looked barren without Ralph’s clutter—mostly family pictures and souvenirs he’d collected over the years.
Someone with cropped black hair sat in an executive leather chair, facing the windows. Torrents of rain blurred the view of gray roads and red brake lights. A large, tanned hand was holding a cell phone to an ear.
Natalie took a long breath and counted to ten, welcoming the respite before she had to face Alex Damon, the chairman and CEO of DDE’s holding company, Global Strategies Corporation. She’d never seen him in real life, although there were plenty of pictures in glossy gossip magazines. Being one of the planet’s most eligible bachelors and a self-made billionaire tended to make one’s face well-known.
Finally he snapped the phone shut and swiveled around to face her.
“Yes?” His voice was a steely baritone that demanded an immediate answer with just that one syllable.
Even seated, his entire body emanated authority and raw sexuality. The dark, tailored suit he was wearing tried to throw a veneer of civilization over him but failed. He would’ve been frightening if it weren’t for the iron control in the winter gray eyes that said he ruled, not his primal instinct. She shivered as his gaze brushed over her, head to toe and then back up to her face. She had the most absurd feeling that he was undressing her with his eyes.
