She was too strong.
Old oaths pained him. Killing his ward would be an unspeakable crime, and such thoughts brought back a lifetime of regrets. He had spent too much of his life protecting the wrong people and fighting the wrong wars for the wrong reasons. The Roshan Empire had rotted from within, over many years, and all the while, he had thought they were making themselves strong enough to defeat the demons.
A long and bloody history haunted him. Like her father, Marah had used forbidden runes to do unspeakable things—Tyrus closed his eyes and heard the roar of her beasts, which were almost as terrible as Breonna’s screams. His greatest fear was that Marah would take after Azmon—he couldn’t help another emperor burn dozens of cities in some mad quest to defeat demons. If he had let Azmon die, decades before, a half dozen kingdoms would have been spared from the bone beasts.
Ishma would still be alive.
History was repeating itself. Tyrus grew more bitter as he imagined the battles they would fight to build Marah’s new empire. They both wanted to stop the demons, but Tyrus feared what Marah would do after they won the war. If she was a dark prophet, a day would come when people would wish she had died young.
