Glorious silence was her cherished companion. Loneliness never entered Marguerite’s space. She loved her life in the beautiful, modernized izba Marcus built for sanctuary. Marguerite spent much of her time outside, communing with nature and for the first time feeling like she was part of something greater than herself.
The monitor showed a dirty SUV coming up the winding road. She smiled. It had been nine weeks since she saw him last but she had a feeling he’d come today. The system showed Marcus was alone and safe. Marguerite’s thighs clenched together as she imagined the next few hours. She got up from the desk and puttered around the roomy cabin, making sure it was presentable and welcoming.
Marguerite was standing by the fireplace when he opened the door. Marcus’ eyes were as candy-green as ever, bright and beautiful in a way that never failed to fascinate her. Sometimes she wondered if he truly was at peace with his career choice as he appeared to be.
Maybe one day in the future he wouldn’t come back.
Maybe one day in the future he’d decide it was time for her to go back.
Maybe one day it would matter enough to pick away at her serenity.
The only day that mattered was today.
“Have you decided?”
“Yes.”
“Yes?”
“Yes. I want to extend our arrangement for another year.”
Marcus walked to her and enfolded Marguerite in his arms. “Happy anniversary, baby.”
“Happy anniversary, Marcus.” She kissed him gently. “Welcome home.”

Present day
Their limbs fit together perfectly. Marcus lay behind Marguerite, occasionally kissing the back of her neck.
“Have you giving more thought to painting?”
“I have. I still think I’d suck at it.”
“But you’re so meticulous, Marcus. That level of detail has to translate to art.”
“Maybe if you’d agree to be my nude model I’d be inspired to try.”
Marguerite wiggled her tender backside against him. “You pig.”
“Oink!” Marcus played with her hair. “I liked your silver dress tonight.”
“Did you now?” She turned around to face him. Her feline smile bespoke of pride.
“Yes. I’m glad you never got rid of the other clothes. They look sexy on you.”
Marguerite pecked him on the mouth before admitting, “Well, I think it’s kind of fun to imagine being your little love slave.”
“Imagine only? You don’t usually think of yourself as my love slave? I’m crushed!”
She laughed, happy in the moment, and eternally grateful for spontaneously deciding to get a drink at Lena’s Bar instead of Chinese.
About D. Cristiana
D. Cristiana explores the darker side of committed relationships. The settings and situations may be unconventional and the desires corrupt, but she’s a firm believer in happy-for-that-particular-couple-endings.
