Uriel's journey to the isolated Silvermane kingdom to visit his brother and Tarsus, his brother's mate, turns deadly when he's ambushed by enemy minotaurs. Although Uriel is captured, he manages to escape with the help of a tanuso—a timid minotaur kept as a slave for the needs of cruel warrior minotaurs. He is soon rescued by his brother and Arhanyin, king of the Silvermane centaurs and Tarsus's father. Arhanyin reluctantly agrees to allow Uriel and the minotaur into the safety of his reclusive kingdom. But Uriel is a thrill seeker, an adventurous soul who revels in all things pleasurable. The lure of a king who has locked himself away from any love or pleasure is a temptation Uriel cannot resist. He's determined to warm the heart and the bed of this icy centaur king. But what begins as a simple challenge soon becomes something deeper and more perilous when Uriel finds himself wanting, needing, far more...

King Arhanyin knows love is only part of his past, lost long ago when his mate died. To have the joy of finding his long-lost son, Tarsus, seemed all he could wish for now. Then Uriel, a brazen, charismatic centaur from the southern lands, blows into his life like a sudden storm. Arhanyin has lived a life of duty and responsibility, aging him before his time. He cannot imagine why this young centaur, so handsome and vital, would find him the least bit attractive. But Uriel does something to him, makes him feel as if all things are possible again. He's in danger of opening his heart to the bold southern centaur even as everything around Arhanyin is changing rapidly. A minotaur is living inside the Silvermane kingdom, Tarsus is finding his way as a true prince to his people, and Arhanyin just might find happiness again—if duty does not destroy it first...

Excerpt from An Outlaw’s Captive by Xander Tracy

  Chapter One

Lords of hell, it was hot out.

Lieutenant Randall Degarre sat back from the rickety table that supported his reams of precious paper—everything from lists of supplies to incomplete maps to front-end reports—and grimaced as he pulled his sticky-wet shirt away from his chest. It was late evening, nearly midnight if the position of the moon was anything to go by, and it was still disgustingly warm.

Eight men had gone down today, five of them to heat stroke. It would be days before they had sufficiently recovered enough to take part in the construction of the Grand Road. A ten-minute break every two hours and a full canteen of water twice a day were barely sufficient to keep the men standing in this heat, much less doing the back-breaking labor of car
ving through rock and hacking down tough scrub trees to make a new, wide path to the southern border.

For the fifth time that day, Randall wondered if he shouldn’t send his father a letter describing the soldiers’ plight. It wouldn’t be the first letter he’d sent asking for some sort of assistance—at the very least, more troops to keep in reserve so the men could be spelled for part of the day. The first letter had merited a brief note consisting of, “Our resources are stretched thin already. Do better with what you have.” The second one hadn’t gotten a reply at all.

Randall knew his father wasn’t overly fond of other people’s suggestions, but he thought he deserved a bit more consideration as the man’s son. Then again, his father had never shown him any special consideration. Public switching for the tiniest infraction. Runs in both the morning and evening, more than any other soldier who wasn’t being actively punished. More paperwork than he could lift in both arms once it was shown he had an aptitude for logistics. If General Degarre’s actions had demonstrated anything over the two years Randall had been in the army, it was that he would only go out of his way not to show favoritism, never the other way around.

Randall pulled at his shirt again, then pushed away from the table and stood up to strip it off. He laid the plain cotton over the back of the chair and stretched his arms over his head before dropping a hand to pinch the bridge of his nose in an effort to stave off the headache he could feel building. He had been staring at the latest notations on their food stores, and the results were puzzling. Particularly because it seemed like they weren’t using them up as fast as they should be. The men had a pound of bread or hard tack a day, a gallon of water and half again that much beer, and a rotation of meats supplemented with peas, corn, or beans. At last count, though, the soldiers had only been consuming about three-quarters of that.
