by Richard Dean Hall

They watched silently as the small planet dwindled in size and then disappeared completely as the ship streaked through time and space.

In the centuries following Barjeen’s departure, great civilizations would rise and flourish, only to decline and erode to mere vestiges of their former grandeur. Cycles of famine, pestilence, disease, plagues, and natural disasters would ravage humanity, claiming the lives of millions. But millions more would fall victim to a human mindset that through the ages accepted war as a natural part of human existence and waged it ceaselessly with an ever-growing efficiency.

Through the annals of history, those of the seed enlightened by Barjeen would bear witness to the wanton destruction. Over the centuries, they would watch the naturals grow ever closer to self-annihilation as they perfected their weapons of devastation and mass destruction. The Kalpeon humans of the seed would also witness the ravaging of the environment by a world population growing beyond the planet’s capacity to sustain it.

And as they journeyed through their ageless lives, they would come to realize that when Barjeen returned, the world would be changed.

  And they were right.
