  Chapter 1

  Alexis

Two headlights target me as I stand on the corner of the street in my little racy red and black dress. I pose with one hand between my spread legs and my chest pushed forward like an actress in the spotlight. Except this isn’t a fucking movie and I’m not part of a script. This is my reality. My life as a whore.

I didn’t pick this life. It slammed into me as much as I plunged into it.

But what kind of choice does a girl have when the only means to get food on the table is to sell her body?

You do what you have to.

The car door opens, smoke rolls and drifts away into the air as a hand beckons me forward, so I follow it blindly. A smile appears on my face when I see a familiar face appear behind a set of vintage glasses.

“Babe, those moves gonna kill me one day,” Deangelo says.

“Don’t make me blush,” I say, raising a brow, but he knows I’m only kidding. I don’t fucking blush. I’m a whore, for crying out loud. But I’ll take the compliment. “Have another job for me?”

“Special one for you, baby.” He puts the car into reverse.

I throw myself on the seat and buckle up, grinning. I don’t smile because I’m happy, but because I know I’ll be able to afford to live for a few more days.

“Exciting,” I say with an over-the-top fake voice.

I grab the rearview mirror and pluck at my black hair, patting my bangs and making sure everything looks spunky.

“C’mon, girl, you know why you gotta do this,” Deangelo says as we drive through the city.

“Yeah, yeah, I don’t need your reminder.” I roll my eyes and look out the window.

“Don’t be mad at me for exploiting the situation. Besides, this one is good. Trust me.”

“Oh, yeah?” I turn my head. “How do you know?”

He shrugs. “Just got this vibe when he called. Sounded like a rich dude, so I checked with my bros, and they told me he’s been with every one of their girls.”

My eyes widen. “All of them?”

Deangelo glances at me from the corner of his eye. “All of them. But that ain’t the fucked-up part.”

“Oh Lord, here it comes,” I say, taking a deep breath.

“Get this … the guy actually doesn’t do anything with the girls.”

  I frown, confused.

“He just wants them to strip and dance until he’s done his business.”

“Just dance? That’s it?” My lips part in shock.

  “Yeah.” Deangelo smiles.

Dance. Strip. I’ve done them both plenty of times but never without the sex. Never.

This guy … my new client … he doesn’t want to fuck me? Doesn’t want me to do anything but dance and strip? What the hell?

“I don’t believe it,” I say, bursting into laughter. “You’re joking, right?”

“Nah, I swear, baby, it’s all truth. He just wants to look at you. And I don’t blame him … you’re something to look at.”

“And you’re sure he’s a real client?” I ask, ignoring his flirt.

“As real as it gets. Even got a check upfront.” He rummages in his pocket and takes out a stack of bills. “Cashed it this morning.”

  “Holy shit,” I gasp.

He pulls one bill off the stack and stuffs it in my hand. “There’s more where that came from.” He winks
.

“Aw, thanks, Deangelo, I appreciate it.” I press a kiss to his cheek.

To be grateful for someone who uses girls to earn money is as low as you can go, but when someone gives you money, you take it. Don’t bite the hand that feeds you. End of story.

We drive all the way through the outer rim of the city and onto a far-off road I’ve never been on before. It takes such a long time to reach our destination that I’m starting to wonder if we’ll ever reach it.

Sweat prickles along the back of my neck as I throw Deangelo a glance, curious as to where we’re going.

“Jesus, where does this dude live?” I ask, trying to break the ice.

“Some big-ass castle in the woods.”

  “Big-ass castle? Now, I’m curious,” I muse.

“Hmm …” He grins at me. “Good, ‘cuz if you do this right, and I expect you to do this right”—he leans in and raises a brow—“he might just want you to come back for a second time. And you know, he hasn’t sent for a girl twice in a row, so you’ve got some work to do, babe.”

“Yeah, no pressure,” I say, swallowing back the lump in my throat.

  Just who is this guy?

“Just do ya thang, babe.” He winks again. “I’ll come back later, ‘round twelve. Be here.”

“Gotcha.” I nod as I get out of the car and close the door.

He rolls down the window and looks at me. “Forgot to tell you something. Don’t look at him.”

I sling my bag over my shoulder. “Why?”

He puts the car into reverse and slams his foot on the gas, yelling at me before leaving. “Just don’t do it if ya wanna stay alive.”

I frown, mumbling, “Okay,” even though I know he can’t hear me.

I walk down the path to a fence, and the huge mansion ahead draws my eyes. Fuck me, castle was the right description. Must be some dude. I shrug. More money is always good for me.

I push the button on the intercom and wait. A buzzer goes off, and the fence opens. Admiring the property, I step onto the stone path. There are so many unkempt flowerbeds and hedges, and the stone path is riddled with weeds. I wonder why he leaves it like this if he’s so rich. Oh, well. Not my problem.

I ring the doorbell, and immediately, the door opens.

An older man with white hair, a mustache, and a tiny set of glasses appears behind.

“Uh, you called for Alexis?” I say.

“Yes, of course, come in, please,” he says, and he opens the door farther, allowing me entry.

“Thanks,” I say, as I take off my coat and bag. “So where do you wanna do this?”

“Oh, no.” The man muffles a laugh and holds up his hand. “It’s not for me.” He smiles when he sees the surprised look on my face. “Follow me, please.”

He walks to a room to the left behind a huge staircase that looks as though it came out of a movie. As he opens the door for me, my eyes find it hard not to look around the place, but I know I have to be careful. One wrong move and I might not make it out alive. It happened before to a girl who was new to the business. She was a little too curious, and when she stumbled into a room where they were weighing crack they shot her. I’d rather not end up lonely in a ditch.

So I swallow back the nerves and focus on the task ahead of me.

Pleasure the man in whatever way he wants, get the money, and get the fuck out of here.

“Before you go inside,” the man behind me suddenly says, “I’ll explain the rules. Strip and dance. You can use the chair if you want. Don’t stop until he says you can. And finally … don’t look behind the curtain.”

I nod but don’t dare look at the man, afraid he’ll see the doubt in my eyes.

“Once he’s done with you, you pack your things and leave. No questions. I’ll pay you at the door.” He places his hand on the small of my back and urges me forward. “Now, go on.”

  “Right.”

I step inside and look around briefly. I find a chair to the right and a black curtain to the left. The moment I look at the figure standing behind it, the door closes behind me, and I jolt up a little. I take a small breath and immediately avert my eyes, determined to do exactly as I was told.

So I place my bag by the door and walk toward the middle of the room. I don’t dare look at the curtain as I stand in front of the chair. A bright light turns on and shines down upon me, blinding me. I cover my eyes with my hand a bit until I’m used to the light. When I look around, I can barely see anything, but I can still see the curtain.

The figure behind the curtain moves his hand, and the music starts to play. I close my eyes and take a breath, eliminating my thoughts and transporting myself to another world. At this moment, I am no longer Alexis; I am no longer that girl with all her responsibilities and history. I am simply a woman. A dancer. A seductress.

As the lights dim, my arms start to move to the rhythm of the music. I undress slowly, sensually, putting emphasis on every inch of my skin as if it’s precious. I lick my lips and twirl around the chair, showing off my bare skin, as my dress falls to the floor and all I’m left in is a see-through thong and bra.

My body moves on its own as I dance, almost possessed. Music is the food that feeds my soul and takes the pain away. But when I open my eyes and see him standing there, I can’t help but look. Even through the curtain, which isn’t as thick as I thought it was, I can see his complete silhouette—a big mass of muscles, bigger than any man I’ve ever laid eyes on—and it takes my breath away quite literally.

And all of those muscles are bundled at one spot.

Right in front of his crotch.

I suck in a breath and sway my hips to the music, watching his hands move up and down, front to back. My nipples tighten from the sight as he jerks himself off right in front of me. I shouldn’t be aroused, this isn’t about me, but my body knows what it likes, and it doesn’t care. I wonder if he knows that I can see him … if he even cares.

I blink and turn around the chair again, but at the second turn, my eyes can’t help themselves anymore. I gorge myself on his body, watching him speed up, pumping himself. The harder he goes, the faster I move. It’s as if we’re both grounded at the moment and joined by our movement alone. The music booms through the speakers, but the silence between us is chilling.

Sexy, almost, in a wicked way.

Licking my lips, I take off my bra and jiggle my tits as I twirl around the chair and do my dance. He turns sideways slowly, exposing the size of his length, and oh, boy … it just about makes my mouth water. That’s how huge he is.

I love watching him, even though I was told not to. I remember the warning all too well, but what harm could it do when I can tell he’s enjoying it? And the funny thing is I’m actually enjoying it too. It’s not often that I can please a man without touching him … and the fact he looks that delicious, even when hiding behind a curtain, is just a bonus. God, I can only imagine what he might look like up close.

There’s no harm in fantasizing, right? Besides, it’s not like I’ll see him again … Plus, a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do to get off, and I’ll sure as hell get myself off when I’m done with this job.

Anxious to see where this is going, I speed up the pace and grind on the chair like a class act, which gets him all pumped up. I watch him intently from behind my lashes, making sure it’s not too obvious. Pants and soft groans are audible underneath the tone of the music, creating goose bumps across my body.

He sounds like a goddamn beast.

As the music comes to an end and I make my final move, he releases himself and the silence returns.

I wait; heavily breathing and sweat dripping down my body, I feel my pussy pounding between my legs. Nothing happens.

  But it should.

He never said I could stop.

I can’t see a thing behind that curtain except for his silhouette. Now that the music has stopped, it suddenly looks more ominous. Thick, hot apprehension hangs in the air warming my skin even more as I
gather myself. His unmoving body makes my heart race, and something inside me makes me grip the chair. Something I hate. Fear.

But I completed my assignment. I pleased him. He doesn’t seem tense anymore.

I have nothing to fear, right?

So then why can’t I shake this feeling of imminent danger?

Suddenly, the door cracks open just slightly, darkness looming beyond.

I suck on my lip and wait a second to allow him to speak, but he doesn’t, so I guess I’m done. Mission accomplished.

I slip my dress back on, grab my stuff, and walk away from the chair.

Right as I pass the curtain, a hand tears through and grips my neck.

Locked in place. Like a twig easily snapped in two.

The tight grip around my throat silences me, but he’s not choking me … Yet.

I turn my head toward the figure behind the curtain who stands tall like a mountain. His strength could crush me within a second … yet he doesn’t.

I stay put, my body frozen, as I realize any movement could mean my end. My eyes plead—no, beg him—to release me, but my voice refuses to cooperate. My mind isn’t wired to surrender. I fight fear like the plague, and I never give up.

Not for as long as I have another body besides my own to protect.

Seconds feel like minutes as we stare at each other, the only thing between us a thin, black veil. Threatening, he squeezes softly, but I’m not afraid of him. I know he can see it in my eyes as I glare at the curtain, refusing to give in.

But then he yanks my body closer to the curtain with just one pull.

A low, gravelly whisper emerges from the dark. “Your name.”

It’s full of unspoken desires and something else … unspeakable pain.

With a raspy voice, I respond. “Alexis.”

One. Two. Three seconds pass before he releases his grip on my neck and the hand slips behind the curtain again.

  I could’ve died.

He could’ve killed me within seconds, yet he didn’t.
