The Grim & The Dead Page 10

“Wow. That was selfless of you,” Redmond drawled. “Stupid, but selfless.”

“Whatever.” I did my best to avoid Redmond’s pointed gaze and moved to the floor next to Aisling. “Not all of this stuff can be for you.”

“No,” Aisling agreed, her expression unreadable. “A lot of it is for you. I was going to hide it and make you search for it later, but now I’m thinking there’s no reason to be mean.”

“Oh, yeah?” I cocked an eyebrow. “What changed your mind?”

“You did.” Her answer was simple. “You were an adult twice this week. Maybe even three times.”

“Oh, geez.” I rolled my eyes. “Is this about the waitress?”

“It’s the one you told me about, isn’t it?” she challenged. “The one who was having trouble with her landlord.”

“It turns out she’s a single mother who works really hard to keep a roof over her kid’s head. I saw her daughter when I was at the diner yesterday. She reminds me of someone.”

  “Who?”

  “You.”

Aisling snorted. “Oh, yeah? Is she awesome and cute?”

  “Mouthy and out of control.”

  “You say potato.”

“Still, she reminded me of you,” I supplied. “Her mother reminded me that we are ridiculously blessed. I have no idea if that coin is lucky, but I do know it’s worth about twenty grand. I ran it by an appraiser out of curiosity.”

“Twenty grand?” Redmond made an exasperated face. “I can’t believe you just gave it away.”

I shrugged. “It seemed like the right thing to do.”

To my utter surprise, Aisling removed the tiara and plopped it down on my head. “You can be the queen for the day. I think you’ve earned it.”

  “I’m a king, not a queen.”

  “Queens are better.”

  “Only in your world.”

“I think you’re going to figure out otherwise, and maybe sooner than you think,” Aisling countered.

Confused, I slid my gaze to Griffin. “Can you translate her gibberish?”

“No, but she’s right. You’re definitely going to figure out that queens are better than kings. I’m looking forward to when you do.”

“Well, great. That makes one of us.”

“We’ll see. You could change your mind.”

  “I doubt it.”

“I guess we’ll have to place a bet on it.”

“Sounds like a plan to me.”

  About the Author

I want to thank everyone who takes the time to read my novels. I have a particular brand of humor that isn’t for everyone – and I know that.

If you liked the book, please take a few minutes and leave a review. An independent author does it all on their own, and the reviews are helpful. I understand that my characters aren’t for everyone, though. There’s a lot of snark and sarcasm in my world – and I know some people don’t like that.

Special thanks go out to Heidi Bitsoli and Phil VanHulle for correcting the (numerous) errors that creep into a work of fiction.

If you’re interested in my future works, follow me on Facebook, Twitter or join my mailing list. I do not believe in spam. I only announce new releases or free promotions.

This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, businesses, places, events and incidents are either the products of the author’s imagination or used in a fictitious manner. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.
