  Chapter Eight

Quickly walking past Terrance who stood there mouth agape Dante made his way to the western gate ignoring the questions of the townspeople and shaking off the few guards who tried to get in his was as he moved forward. Not too surprised Dante met Sergeant Gareth just outside the gate and as the man walked up with a laugh and an offered friendly handshake Dante leaned back and raised a fist striking the man hard on the jaw knocking him backwards as everyone around them gasped in surprise.

“That hurt like fucking hell you oversized toddler demon.” Dante said with a small smirk as he offered the man a hand.

Hooting with laughter Sergeant Gareth grabbed Dante’s hand “Should have seen your face when she hit you with Forest Brilliance, it was priceless to say the least.” Hefting himself up with Dante’s aid and waving off the guards and townspeople alike he continued. “I suspected you weren’t fibbing boy and with your moves back there I doubt anyone would doubt you either. From now on just call me Gareth.” Motioning for the storage keeper to come forward with the promised gold and offering it and shaking Dante’s hand all the while with a toothy grin planted on his face.

Smiling back and handing all but a few thousand of his gold to the storage keeper Dante asked him to start an account for him. While being taken by Gareth and Shay off to the pub to celebrate. Most of the night went by in a blur as Dante drank more than was wise with his new-found friends before being dragged back to Shay’s house to sleep it off.

Head pounding as he woke Dante almost wished he were dead instead. As he became more aware of his surroundings though he did feel the telltale signs of a cat stretching and stepping off his chest with a purr.

“Interesting as I had expected” Nero purred as Dante reached out and scratched him behind the ear.

“Painful more like it but otherwise no complaints.” Dante chuckled before flinching at the pain it caused him.

Nero laughed “Your latest pain is your own fault but this one time I will take care of it” Reaching out and bumping his head against Dante’s causing all the grogginess and pounding pain in his head to vanish Nero continued “You’ve made good progress but there is still much to do. First on the list is the Sprite Queen. As you found out yesterday it will not be easy but since she is still sitting at less than fifty percent health you may yet have a chance. She is one of the weakest of the legendary beasts after all so it should not be too much trouble for you. Only allowed to offer you a small hint though.” Fading away before Dante’s eyes Nero finished speaking “Her rotations are the same as the Sprite Princess you used to handle so well in the game.”

Smiling sorrowfully Dante said aloud “Thanks buddy and it was nice to wake up to you nearby again…” Trailing off before he hopped out of bed and dressed having found himself in nothing but his underclothes before wandering out to the dining area.

Moans of pain could be heard as he approached the table with Shay wincing as he looked in Dante’s direction, the movement having caused him pain. Simply mouthing the word “Mornin” before returning to his toast and coffee.

Mariann though held a giggling cheerful baby gave Dante a wry smile “Seems someone knows how ta handle their spirits.” Waving Dante to sit as he was about to head over to the stove and get his own breakfast and coffee. “Guests don’t serve themselves round here. Especially ones that are legendary Adventurers” winking at him knowingly as she brought him a plate full of eggs, hash browns, bacon and toast along with a steaming cup of freshly brewed coffee.

Quickly downing the breakfast between telling Mariann the story of his fight with the Sprite Queen at her request between bites, before he gave Shay a pat on the back announcing to them that he was heading out to finish his work from the day before. Both Mariann and Shay stood up quickly as Dante headed out the door both trying their best to stop him. Activating Shadows of Chaos just as he closed the door behind him Dante hurried down the street barely hearing the door open behind him.

Barely making it out of the western gate before the timer ran out Dante stopped before the forest to restore his stamina and catch his breath. Looking back making sure no one saw him he slipped into the forest heading directly towards the Sprite Queen's den. Gaining only a bit of exp along the way as Dante killed the mobs that spawned on his path to his goal he made it there even quicker than the day before.

Coming up to the Sprite Queen quietly again Dante looked her over to see if anything had changed.

  Legendary Beast: Sprite Queen

  Level: 72

  Hp: 25,875/57,500

It seemed that like the world bosses of the game world the Sprite Queen did not regain her health like players or NPCs did over time. Knowing he had been weaker the last time and that the Sprite Queen was obviously on guard as she quickly looked around her seeking any possible attackers Dante activated his stealth ability and snuck up to her as quietly as possible.

Wanting to do this as swiftly as possible while taking the least amount of damage possible Dante changed up his attack rotation to maximize the damage output while keeping the legendary beast stunned in one form or another.

Starting with Chaos Hold, then shifting to Intertwined Fates followed by Scatter Blades and Cascading Blades Dante managed to knock out a good chunk of her health before shifting to Shadows of Chaos to hide while moving around to get in place to strike from behind again.

This time like the last he repeated the same rotation, but as the Sprite Queen hit five percent she started to glow with dark energy and seemed to be changing. As he watched unable to move the plants on her seemed to wither and turn black and dead while her ethereal beauty faded leaving what looked like an empty husk. Through the shift her information changed.

  Legendary Beast: Dim Sprite Queen

  Level: 72

  Hp: 28,750/28,750

He’d suspected this to happen and had hoped that he could withstand the first attack in her frenzied state. Murky brown vines lashed out at him on cue and stuck him with what felt like the force of a large vehicle going at least 60mph. Taking him down to 10% of his health he stood up quickly and activated the skill Scatter Blad
es drawing closer to her and knocking off a hefty 3% with the attack before switching to Cycle of Fate which spun the creature around allowing him to strike her back with Cascading Blades swapping to Shadows of Chaos and moving behind a nearby tree before she could trigger her stun attack since her health was now under fifty percent sitting at only twelve thousand and seventy-five.

Since he had hidden behind the tree the flash of light did not stun him or knock him out of stealth and the following blast was shot off into the woods in a random direction with the Dim Sprite Queen screeching in anger at having missed her prey. With only fifteen seconds left of stealth Dante dashed out from behind the tree and cast Chaos Hold stunning and locking the monster into place before unleashing attack after attack leading to her health hitting zero.

Tired, sore, and rather happy at having finished the fight Dante wandered over to the corpse of the beast. As he was looting he was surprised by a popup.

You have defeated a legendary beast!

Having done so you have earned the title Legendary Slayer and gained 500,000 exp.

You have found a piece of the legendary set!

Luck must be on your side! Before you is a piece of the legendary set of gear which has a low random chance of dropping off of legendary creatures. Do you wish to bind it to your current gear?

  Yes/No

+17 Plated Chest piece of the Sprite Queen +250 HP

Powered by the forest itself this armor infuses its wearer with an abundance of health while increasing the overall defensive power.

  Set effects:

  2 pieces: ???

  3 Pieces: ???

  Full set: ???

Without a thought Dante checked yes and was not disappointed with the effects on his armor. The plates of his armor now had an almost wooden texture with scrawling runes that shifted from purple to black in the darkness. He quickly grabbed the rest of the random items and another fifteen thousand gold off the Sprite Queen corpse before she faded away leaving a small fairy ring of toadstools where she had been slain.

  Chapter Nine

Shouting could be heard as he was heading back out of the forest. Most of the town had gathered at the western gate and seemed to be readying for war as he approached. A woman's voice rose above everyone else's though as Dante got close enough to be seen by the group.

“What were you thinkn’ you bloody madman!” Mariann came barreling towards him, face red with rage and streaked with tears of worry.

Getting ready to duck a swing he was surprised by her motherly hug as he replied “I was just cleaning up the mess I had made is all.”

She released him and looked him up and down as Shay, Leo, and Gareth all approached the two. “To Hell with clean’n up messes boy, ya need to not get yerself killed. By what I done heard you already died twice yesterday!” Mariann bellowed pointing a finger at Dante and then turning and glaring at the men around her. “Hope yer all happy, he could’ve died out there because you knuckleheads started this whole mess.” Before stomping off back into town.

Shay chuckled “I’m gonna pay something fierce for this one kiddo, so I hope it was worth it.” Eyeing Dante’s armor and the obvious changes.

Nodding Dante replied “I would say the new Sprite Queen infused armor is more than worth it after I finally put her down today.”

All eyes were on him now most of which were bulging to the point he thought that they might pop out of some people's heads. Gareth on the other hand just laughed, a hearty belly laugh “As one might expect of one of you damn Adventurers!”

Terrance came up behind the group and spoke as if answering an earlier question “Ali said he never stopped by for potions…” Trailing off as he realized Dante was standing there.

Shaking his head Leo spoke up “Do ya even know what a potion is boyo?” Looking at Dante with a smile “Ya know you don’ have tah rely on just ya good looks and skill out when fight’n monsters.”

Blushing a bit “To be honest I forgot about potions but my usual play style I avoid potions and buffs going instead for relying on quick reflexes and skills available. I do have to say though that normally I would use potions until I got a better understanding of a class at least…” Trailing off in thought.

Gareth gave Dante a hearty smack on the back before leading him and their small group through the crowd. Though they were heading towards the pub Dante begged off saying he owed someone an apology before heading back to Shay and Mariann’s house to find her sitting at the dining room table tears streaming down her face. Not sure what to say he stood there just inside as Shay came up behind him and gently pushed past to comfort his wife.

Sobbing Mariann spoke up “I… know I’m be’n… silly” Sniffling between words “But ya be like family now an… an.. I don’t be want’n to see ya get hurt.” Breaking down in more sobs.

With Shay standing behind her Dante stepped forward grabbing a chair and scooted it closer to her to sit closer before taking her hand and speaking calmly “I have to say I have felt more at home here in this world than I ever did in the world I was born to. With that though there is the fact that someone brought me to this world to do something that the people of this world are not as of right now able to handle on their own. I can’t be sure where it will take me or for how long but I will have to leave here soon.” At that she cried more quietly looking up at him “But,” he continued “if there is any way for me to come back here and spend the rest of my days with you two and the little one then I will do everything in my power to make sure that happens.”

“Why” she spoke up again stopping less frequently to sniffle between words “why does it have to be you?”

“I hate ta say it dear bu’ we both know he is a born hero this’n. Just think of how we met the lad. We both also know tha if the higher beings' brough’ im ere then they ave a need fer him grea’er than even us.” Shay spoke up with a hand firmly planted on Mariann’s shoulder as if to hold her steady.

Nodding with acceptance “I know ya be right Shay, but I would fight all the higher beings to make sure he comes home safe.” Looking up to the ceiling as if challenging them herself before standing up and heading to her and Shay’s bedroom and the sounds of their crying child.

Unsure of himself but knowing that it was best to leave things as they were Dante stood up and looked at Shay “Give her a hug for me when she calms down. I need to be heading on to my next goal and it would probably be best that I get moving sooner rather than later.” Pausing to think a moment before speaking again “I do appreciate everything you have all done for me. Should I have the opportunity to come back this way before my work is done I will do so.”<

With a sad smile Shay took Dante’s hand and with damp eyes and tight voice said “Make sure ya do kiddo or mah wife jus’ might hunt ya down herself.” Releasing Dante with a chuckle speaking again just as Dante got to the door “Make sure ya get some potions a’for ya leave town. Higher ones only know when ya gonna make it to another town the rate you get into trouble.”

Not wanting to lose his resolve Dante nodded as he headed out the door and down to the pub to say his other goodbyes. As he was walking he thought about the time he spent in this world so far and quickly realized that the words he said to Mariann were filled with honesty. Thus far the good and bad of it all made him feel alive like never before. For the first time in his life he felt like he had found the right path and that it would lead to what he truly desired in life.

It didn’t take him long to reach the pub and when he walked in though it had been bustling it seemed as if everyone was able to pick up on his somber mood and left him be as he waded through the tables and chairs to the bar where Leo stood handing another mug to Gareth who quickly quieted down as Dante approached.

“I know that look boy.” Gareth spoke first “Seems you’ll be heading out soon I take it.” The last statement equal parts question and factual statement.

“Figured it might be about time to see where the roads lead me.” Dante said almost offhandedly while taking a tall glass of Serlonian Rum from Leo’s offering hand. Putting caution to the wind he downed it all in one gulp not spluttering once before handing the empty glass back. “Found out that I would be hunting some legendary beasts for a while so thought I would head over to the Imp Shrine and see if General Targith was still waddling around.”
