June stuck her head into his room. “Duh, swim trunks.”
“What am I supposed to do with them?” Cash held them up by two fingers like the offending floral fabric might bite him.
“Put them on, silly.” She disappeared. Then she leaned around the door again. “Let me know when you're decent and I’ll come wrap your ribs.”
He slipped on the shorts then glanced in the mirror at his white skin. He really needed a tan. “I’m ready.”
When June came back into the room he realized she’d changed as well. No jeans and tee shirt, now she sported a very tiny red bikini. She slowly twirled for him. “You like?”
“I’m confused.” He sat and she wrapped his ribs, her hair brushing his shoulders, her scent filling his mind. His body was tightening. He wanted her.
When she was done, as if she read his mind, or saw his reaction, she stepped away from him. “Not the time. Or the place.” She pulled him to his feet. “I’ve got a surprise.
When he went into the living room, the furniture moved back to the walls and a tarp with sand sat in the middle of the room, beach chairs on top. A tray with frozen drinks sat on the coffee table. A beach scene played on the television.
“Your own private Mexico.” She held out a glass, and then removed it from his reach. “You taking pain killers?”
Cash shook his head. “They give me nightmares. I’ve never been able to take prescription drugs.”
June smiled and handed him the glass. “Then welcome to Mexico. Sit and watch the waves come in, let the sand tickle your toes, and drink your rum.”
“You talked to Amy.” He sipped the drink, taking the paper umbrella and throwing it to the ground on the sand.
“She called to see how you were doing. She may have let slip your plans.” June admitted.
Cash felt the blood rush to his face. “All my plans?”
June sat her drink on the coffee table. And then she leaned over and kissed him. When she sat back down, she smiled. “You’re going to have to settle for me.”
“What the heck are you talking about?” Cash looked at the woman sitting next to him and wondered what it would be like to kiss her like that forever.
“I’m not a complete stranger,” she sipped her drink, watching his reaction.
Six months later, the two of them sat in the Boise airport. June looked at the ticket in her hand. A week in Mexico. Grandma had a care provider staying with her for the week and June had Cash sitting next to her. Last week, he’d invited her on this flyaway. An anniversary present to celebrate dating for six months of heaven. Now, a week for just the two of them.
She glanced over at Cash when he’d checked his watch for the third time. “What’s up?”
“Just waiting for them to announce our plane has been diverted to Alaska and that Mexico has been closed for tourist season.” Cash took her hand and kissed each finger. “I don’t have the best luck with vacations.”
She curved her hand over his cheek. “That was before.”
He cocked his head, “Before what?”
“Before us.” And she kissed him.
