Children of Chaos Page 29

by Greg F. Gifune

  AUTHOR’S NOTE

  (Contains Spoilers)

I’m sure many will recognize that one particularly important component of Children of Chaos is a re-imagining of Joseph Conrad’s classic tale Heart of Darkness, the river replaced with a road and Kurtz replaced with the character of Martin. Some may also notice a direct nod here or there to Heart of Darkness, like the character “Holly Quinn” or Rudy’s death by spear, but this is only one part of the story, and otherwise Chaos branches off into its own tale (and one obviously vastly different from Conrad’s). It is one aspect I’ve always wanted to attempt, and I hope I’ve succeeded in bringing my own spin to the general Heart of Darkness theme, which in the end, good or bad, is a wholly and uniquely human one. Also, those familiar with Mexico will notice I’ve taken some liberties geographically once the story moves beyond Tijuana. These changes, designed solely for dramatic effect and as plot device, are my own and are not designed to reflect the literal. And of course the Corridor of Demons is purely a fictional creation as well…at least as far as I know. Finally, thanks as always to Shane Staley for his patience and support, and to my family and friends for putting up with the emotionally drained, brooding and not always pleasant version of me you all had to deal with while I was writing this novel.
