“Why does this have to be so hard?” I asked.
“I don’t know. Life is hard, I guess, but anything worth having is worth fighting for.”
I laughed. “You sound like my mom.”
“I sound like my mom.” Travis kissed me again.
It was sweet and full of promise. My entire body became lighter, and the sun rose behind my closed eyes. When he broke the kiss, I squinted into the sunlight. The dark clouds parted in the sky and in my heart.
I decided Travis was right. I could choose to live in the moment and enjoy the now, or risk missing out on my one chance to act like a normal teenager.
“So, where are we going to lunch? And, you’re buying, right? Because this is a date.” I said.
He smiled, picked up my bag and put his arm around my shoulders. “There’s this little Italian place a couple of blocks over. They have the best marinara sauce you’ve ever had.”
“Great, because I’m starving.”
