Kane snorted. “Well, we’re making quite the entrance here.”
Davin shrugged. Someone had to.
He stopped and turned to where Jake was still sitting. The young man could have been him years ago.
“You remember that as well. Make sure you pick the right side, or fucking just get a job delivering pizza.”
Jake locked eyes with him, and he could only hope he understood his meaning. The boy rose, unsteadily, and started limping off.
Davin turned and groaned. He touched his shoulder and pulled back with a small amount of blood.
“Going soft now over a little cut?” Torin said. The man nudged Davin, and he grunted again. “Come on, pussy. Let’s get you cleaned up before we go see Morgan.”
Chapter Twenty
Morgan tried to settle her nerves, but nothing helped. Not even when Mama Ricci came in to dote on her.
All she could think about was the look in Davin’s eye as he left her room. Like he didn’t care if he lived or died as long as he got revenge.
It tore her up inside seeing him that way.
“You’re supposed to be resting.”
She turned and found Davin’s handsome face. His strong frame leaned against the door.
Morgan whipped off the mask and stumbled out of bed into his arms. Her whole body shook as sobs wracked her.
“I’m sorry, baby,” he whispered in her ear.
Davin ran a soothing hand over the back of her head.
“I know you lost everything, but we’ll rebuild it. I swear, I will rebuild it with my bare hands if I have to.”
Morgan pulled back to stare at him, tears still pooled in her eyes.
“I thought I’d never see you again,” she said, and stood on her toes to kiss him.
After a moment, Davin pulled back to stare at her in awe. “I can replace the bookstore, but I can’t replace you.”
His arms wrapped around her in a crushing hug, but she loved the feel of him holding her.
“God, I love you,” he whispered. “I’m total shit for saying it, but I do. I love you so much that sometimes I think my heart might burst with all the love I feel.”
Morgan looked at his pained face. “You aren’t shit,” she whispered. “You’re my hero. You were back then, and you still are. Without you, I wouldn’t even be standing here several times over.”
He shook his head but stopped when she placed a hand on his chin.
“Yes,” she whispered. “I have loved you since the first time I saw you in that alley. The boy who did what was in his heart.”
He kissed her now with the passion she’d come to love about him. When he pulled away this time, they were both panting and pink.
“Told you,” someone said.
They both turned, and she was surprised to see someone she recognized from the news: Finn Kelly. She blinked several times as she now realized how much like Davin he looked.
Davin lifted his middle finger. “Has anyone told you that being a smug prick will give you wrinkles?”
He guided her carefully back to the bed and placed the covers over her body before putting the mask back on her face.
“Doctor’s orders,” he said, and winked.
She glanced over at Finn, who made his way into the room and then to Davin. “You know Finn Kelly?”
Davin sighed loudly. “Finn’s my cousin.”
The well-dressed man nodded to her. “Nice to finally meet you, Morgan. I’m sorry it wasn’t under better circumstances.”
She nodded, still not quite sure what was going on. Sure, she’d heard of Finn, but he was barely in the news these days. A lot of people were saying he’d gone completely legit, and given up crime.
“So you had quite the night,” Finn said, and stared at Davin.
He sat down next to her on the bed, and for a moment she wondered if she should even be hearing what they had to say.
“We had to make a point,” Davin said.
Finn snorted. “Well, I’m fairly certain we have.”
Davin glanced over to Morgan. “They had to know what happens when they come for one of us.”
Morgan frowned. “I’m one of you?”
Davin took her hand and ran his thumb soothingly over the soft skin there. “You’re mine. That makes you one of us.”
He glanced to Finn who only nodded his agreement. “Well, I guess that’s it,” he said. “We know they’ll respond to this.”
Davin scoffed. “Let them try,” he said. “I’m betting our little display will have many of their men ready to run.”
Finn nodded and made his way back over to the door. “Looks like you’ve got this handled.”
Davin nodded. He would make them wish they’d never even thought about coming to the city if it was the last thing he did.
Finn stopped just inside the door and glanced back to where Davin still sat. “So I take it you plan on staying more long term?” A small smile played on his lips as he spoke.
Davin frowned. “Did you plan this?”
Finn gave a small laugh and shrugged before stepping out of the room.
“Damn him,” Davin mumbled.
“What’s wrong?” Morgan said. She sat up and placed a hand on his shoulder.
He winced as she hit his new wound.
This time it was she who frowned. “You got shot?”
He shook his head. “More like the bullet scraped me.”
She snapped the mask off as the lines between her brows deepened. “Scraped?”
He smiled when she rolled her eyes and cursed under her breath.
“What am I going to do with you?” she muttered.
A wide grin spread across his face as he stared at her. “Maybe you should come nurse me back to health when you get out.” He winked. “Pretty sure I can get a little outfit together.”
A blush spread across her cheeks. He watched as her lips parted and eyes dilated.
“Fuck,” he grunted. “Remind me to never tease you unless I can do something about it.”
He leaned forward and kissed her mouth once more. This time it was a slow, sweet kiss, one that held promises for a later date.
Morgan pulled back and yawned widely.
“You should get some rest,” he said softly.
She moved over on the bed slightly. “Stay with me,” she said, and patted the bed.
Davin looked at the warm spot next to her and felt all the tension from the day just melt away.
“Always, baby,” he mumbled as he climbed into the bed next to her. “I’ll always be right here.”

Author Bio
Madison currently lives with her husband and two children in the Valley of the Sun in Arizona. After leaving the frozen tundra of the north, she was more surprised than anyone with how much she has enjoyed living in the desert. Seeing as she stated on more than one occasion before moving to Arizona how much she hated heat, it was an odd move, but it seems her hatred for sub-zero temperatures and ice has won out in the end.
When she’s not writing, she’s enjoying time with her family. Madison and her family frequent festivals in the area, as well as local cultural events, and spend time with family in the area. In the summer, she is most likely to be found in the pool with the family and in the winter by the fireplace. Since both her children are autistic, days can be a little chaotic, but with her husband beside her, there’s nothing she can’t handle.
