The One Who Got Away Page 28

by Caroline Overington

She was the girl who hated me as a child for reasons I couldn’t fathom.

She was the teenager who grew up slimmer and prettier, who escaped the Low Side, and moved to New York City.

She was the stepsister who married rich.

She was a person bound to call on me in a crisis, but not when time came to take care of her little girls while she went on vacation.

‘No, no, it’s just easier for them to stay in their own home …’ she’d said.

Vincent broke the silence between us.

‘You want me to fix it, Miss Molly?’

  ‘Fix it,’ I said.

‘You know that’s a different price?’

  ‘I understand.’

I don’t allow myself to think about what happened next. I think only of how I retreated to my apartment, put my bare feet up on the balcony rail and waited for my father to call and say: ‘Molly? Can you come over? Please. Just come now.’
