“I’ll come banging on your door one day,” Kerri assures me. “Don’t you worry, I’m bound to have a nervous breakdown at some point.”

Again, I doubt it but I keep my mouth shut.

“So what are you going to wear?” Kerri changes the subject.

“What do you think I should wear?” I know my voice sounds nervous but I can’t hide it. Especially from her.

“We’ll find you something good,” Kerri assures me. “Something that won’t let him keep those gorgeous hands of his to himself.”

My body heats up just thinking about those gorgeous hands and how I can’t wait to have them on my naked skin.

“I can read faces you know,” Kerri smirks. “And yours is extraordinarily x-rated right now.”

“I can’t help it.” I give her a smile before hitting my phone to check the time. Only five more hours until I get to see Jamie Donovan again.

  ––––––––––

I open the door to our house and am surprised to see Tony sitting on the couch in his sweats watching re-runs of an old sitcom. He usually comes home way after Kerri and I.

“Are you feeling okay?” I ask him concerned, as I walk over to the couch.

“I’m fine,” Tony replies, giving me a nervous deer in headlights stare.

I lift a brow. “What’s with the look?”

“Nothing,” he shakes his head like he’s got some sort of tick.

“Tony…” I slip off my shoes, jump on the couch and hug my knees to my chest. “Start talking and I don’t have much time because Jamie’s picking me up in an hour.”

“Oh God,” Tony moans, closing his eyes.

“Oh God, what?” I reply suspiciously, then grab onto his leg and squeeze.

  “Ow!” Tony cries out.

“Start speaking or I am going to kick your ass,” A feeling of dread begins to trickle down my spine. The way Tony’s looking at me…

It’s like he feels sorry for me. And pity from Tony cannot be a good thing.

“You totally would!” Tony says as he rubs his leg.

  I nod emphatically.

“I didn’t want to tell you, not before I spoke to Kerri about it.” Tony starts rambling and I can’t help but start to feel nauseous.

“Please talk.” I practically beg him. “I can’t take it. Don’t do this to me. What is going on?”

Tony stares at me for a long moment then covers his face with his hand.

  “Tony-“ I plead.

He sighs then pins me with his gaze.

“I saw Jamie at a lunch with Stacy Tennison at the Ivy today.”

The beautiful Stacy Tennison. The executive that looks like a Barbie. I feel my stomach tighten even though I know it’s not right to jump to any conclusions, but it’s still hard not to when Tony looks so uncomfortable.

“And?” I’ve had a few run ins with Stacy and she’s never been anything but fake sweet. She doesn’t seem like she’d be Jamie’s type. But then, Stacy’s beautiful. And what guy doesn’t like beautiful?

“She was real flirty,” Tony goes on with a gulp. “And usually I wouldn’t even say anything because I’m sure everyone flirts with him, but when they got up to leave and were outside by the valet… she kind of leaned into him. And then they kind of kissed.”

“Kind of?” I whisper. My heart stops beating. And I want to throw up every single one of those damn Krispy Kreams and cookies.

“And then I found out through some intern investigation that they used to date,” Tony’s voice sounds far, far away now. Like I’m living some awful nightmare that I can’t wake up from. “And then her assistant told me they spoke the other day and Stacy said they were rekindling their romance.”

“Goddamnit,” I whisper in horror as I fall back into the couch.

How did I walk right into this? How did I believe him? Or even let myself hope or even trust him? I know better. I’ve lived with this kind of man my whole damn life!
