Chapter 1
It had been two months since I’d left my billionaire BDSM boyfriend Trevor Dunaway in L.A. to return to Chicago with no job, no plan, and no soul. The relationship with Trevor drained the life out of me. I completely lost my identity as Giavanna Johnson, the strong, independent entertainment journalist who would one day have her own television show, and I became Trevor’s submissive girlfriend, a nameless, empty shell of a woman who had no purpose but to obey and serve Trevor.
It took everything that I had to leave him, and he didn’t make it easy. The situation completely broke me, but, in hindsight, I was glad that I left. After I returned to Chicago, I was in one of my darkest hours when a ray of light from my past illuminated my life. Christoff Diemacht Hartmann, the man I stupidly let get away even though I loved him more deeply than I’ve ever loved anyone, serendipitously reached out to me shortly after I escaped Trevor.
Not moving to Germany with Christoff when he asked me to last year was probably one of the biggest mistakes of my life. It hurt him deeply, and it caused us to go our separate ways. He came back for me, but it was too late; I was already involved with Trevor.
Each time I walked away from Christoff, it tore me apart. The worst part was I knew situation was one of my own making. I was foolish enough to turn my back on true love twice: once for my career and once for Trevor. I didn’t know if I could ever forgive myself for choosing Trevor over Christoff. It was a short-sighted decision.
I would give anything to go back in time and put in the work with Christoff to build something great. After I escaped the emotionally grueling, sadomasochistic relationship with Trevor—I tried once to undo the past by being open with Christoff about how much I wanted to be with him. But it was too late. He said that he cared about me, but the timing was off.
He had just gotten out of a complicated relationship with Sports Illustrated model Arianna Turlington and I was still healing from the break up with Trevor. Christoff said it would cause more harm than good for us to rush into something right away. I realized he was right so I never brought up my feelings for him again.
But now, two months later, I wondered if we had let enough time pass and done enough healing. I still had some scars from the relationship with Trevor, but I was feeling a lot healthier and grounded than before.
Christoff had come back to Chicago to visit me again this past Monday. Today was Friday, which meant it was his last day here before he had to return to Germany tomorrow morning to resume his duties as an international rock star. We were riding in silence in his silver Mercedes rental, and I really wanted to ask him what was going on between us. If I didn’t speak up tonight, who knew how long I would have to wait before we would have another opportunity to discuss where our relationship was going.
I wanted to know that he was mine and that I could have him all the time. And not just in the bedroom. I wanted to be his girlfriend, not just some girl he came to visit and party with occasionally. Of course, it sometimes felt like we were in a relationship. But to actually be in one, we’d need to have the talk. Which meant I needed to ask him.
And I would. Any minute now.
As soon as I accepted that yes, I could ask him if he wanted a relationship, but he could always say no, that he wasn’t interested in committing.
I stared out the window as we cruised down Lakeshore Drive. The lake looked so pretty with all of the boats docked against the backdrop of the picturesque Chicago skyline. I sighed as I took it all in. It was the first time that night that my mind was calm. But that calm only lasted a second. I looked over at him as he navigated off the highway in silence. All right, I hope this goes well.
“Christoff?”
“Yes, Gia?” I loved hearing my name on his lips. My heart skipped a beat as he brushed his deep chocolate brown hair away from his brow and glanced over at me. His dark sapphire eyes always put me in a trance.
But for a moment something flashed in his eyes. It seemed like he had a lot on his mind. And here I was obsessing over what I wanted. If I really wanted to be his partner, I would have to learn to put my own needs aside sometimes to check in and be there for him.
“What are you thinking about? You’ve been so quiet tonight. Is something wrong?”
“I’m just tired, Gia. Nothing’s wrong.” Christoff sighed.
“Oh.” I shifted my weight.
“You seem tense. Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“Do you want to stop for dessert on the way back to your place? We can get gelato… or tiramisu… or both. I know those are your favorite.” He knew he had me. He was almost singing his words.
Never let it be said that a potentially disastrous conversation can’t be put off until after dessert. At least this way we’d both be in a better mood no matter how it went.
“Hell yeah, Christoff! That’s a great idea.”
“I knew that would perk you right up. Let me turn around. Wait, you can’t make U-turns here. And there are no left turns at the next few lights. We are going to have to drive up a few blocks, go around the corner, and come back down.” His jaw tightened, and he leaned forward and tried to switch lanes.
“Dammit! They won’t let me over,” he muttered under his breath. His bicep flexed as he shifted gears, sped up, and tried to change lanes again. The person in the next lane pressed down on their horn. Christoff sighed and ran his fingers through his hair.
“Was that really necessary?” he said softly through gritted teeth. He never showed much emotion, and the fact that a silly driver had him frustrated let me know that there was something deeper going on beneath the surface.
“Chicago traffic is the worst,” I groaned. “Christoff, if it’s going to take too long, we don’t have to do dessert. I know you’re tired, and you have to get up early tomorrow.” I placed my hand on his thigh. He took my hand in his.
“Gia, do you really think I’m going to let a little traffic get in the way of taking you out for dessert? What kind of man do you take me for?” He smirked. “If there is something you want, I will stop at nothing to make sure you have it, even if it’s just a piece of tiramisu. Now buckle your seat belt and let me handle this.” He kissed the back of my hand before putting two hands on the wheel, speeding up, and aggressively cutting two lanes over and turning down a back alley.
He looked over at me. “This will get us there in no time.” His
eyes sparkled. “You look really nice tonight, Gia.” His melodic baritone voice and rich German accent were always so pleasing to my ears.
“Thanks, Christoff.” My heart fluttered. I was wearing one of my favorite dresses. It was black and nude lace with a sweetheart neckline. It was such a nice dress that I only wore it on special occasions.
“That dress looks familiar. Have I seen it before?” He furrowed his brow and rubbed his chin.
“Yes, you have seen it before. It was a very important night. Don’t you remember?” I smiled and leaned in until I caught his gaze again.
“You know I can’t remember these things, Gia.” He shook his head. “Hmmm… maybe if I felt it, it would trigger my memory.” He let his fingers play with the lace on my dress as he slowly ran his hand up my thigh. He smiled. His full lips looked delicious. My body tingled all over as his hand traveled over my hip and squeezed my ass. His hands were so big and strong. His touch made my nipples harden.
This is what I wanted, the feeling that I was his and his alone.
“Hmm, you’re not wearing anything underneath that dress, are you?” He raised his eyebrows. His voice was so sexy.
“You asked me that the first night I wore this dress.” I giggled. “Now do you remember?” I playfully ran my fingertips across his thigh. He looked me up and down as we stopped at a red light. He reached over and slowly slid both of his hands up my waist and under my breasts. His touch was warm and firm. He used his thumbs to play with my nipples. I was sure he could feel their hardness through the thin material of my dress. He cupped both my breasts, one in each hand, and kneaded them with firm, deep strokes. I was getting warm and moist down below. I started to spill out of my dress as he touched me with more fervor. I moaned as he leaned over and buried his face in my bosom. I enjoyed the wetness of his mouth on my skin. My entire body ached for him.
We both jumped in unison when we heard someone lay on their horn. My heart was racing from the exhilaration of Christoff’s touch mixed in with the shock of the loud horn abruptly cutting through my thoughts of having Christoff inside of me. I glanced up. The light had turned green.
“Green light, Christoff!” I breathed. He quickly kissed me on the lips before taking a deep breath and putting his hands back on the wheel.
“Sorry. You look so good tonight that I just can’t keep my hands off you.” He flashed the sexiest smile. I began to crave him even more as I watched his massive bicep flex while he shifted gears and sped off as the light turned yellow. I glanced over at him as I adjusted my dress so that I was not falling out of it anymore. I could see the hardness of his cock pushing to get out of his pants. I wanted to be on top of him so badly. We were both still breathing heavily as we drove across a bridge that overlooked the Chicago River. The city looked majestic under the glow of the amber sunset.
“Ohhhh! I remember that dress,” Christoff said, laughing. His whole face lit up. “You were wearing that dress on the first night I had the pleasure of being inside of you.”
“Mmmm, that was a night to remember.” Memories of my first night with Christoff drowned out the questions about our relationship that had been haunting me.
He brushed my long layers behind my ear before letting his fingertips slowly travel down my neck and over my shoulder. He lowered his voice as his touch became firmer.
“That was the first night that I had the privilege of kissing your soft lips and touching your smooth sexy skin.” He caressed my lower stomach as he spoke. His touch gave me butterflies. “I don’t have a great memory for details, but I still remember that night vividly… touching you and tasting you on my private jet.”
I let out a ragged breath as he wedged his long, thick fingers between my thighs.
“My cock gets hard every time I think about how you let me bend you over and take you from behind. I gave it to you so hard, and you took every inch of it. Mmm, the way you moaned every time I smacked your ass…”
I shuddered as he brushed against my clit with the back of his hand.
“God, Gia, that was the hottest sex of my life.”
My creamy caramel skin glowed pink with excitement. He had been with some of the most stunning models and actresses in the industry. It didn’t make sense that me, a struggling journalist with an imperfect body and hair that couldn’t be tamed gave him the hottest sex of his life. But that was the thing about Christoff. When he said it, I believed him. When he touched me, I felt like the sexiest woman alive.
I spread my legs as he moved my thin lace panties to the side and began to toy with my clit. A warmth started at my core and radiated through my entire body. My breathing became rapid. I was throbbing for him. I moaned as he slipped two fingers deep inside of me. My muscles clenched as he slowly slid them in and out.
“Mmm, Gia, you smell so good right now. It’s making me so hard,” he breathed softly. “I love how wet you get for me,” he murmured as he pressed his fingers inside of me harder and faster. My breath hitched in my throat as he massaged my clit with his thumb and continued to press into me with his fingers. I let out a breathy moan as my muscles tightened around his fingers, and he took me completely over the edge. I felt the blood rush to my cheeks, and my entire body trembled. I exhaled as he slowly slid his fingers out of me. My heart raced as I watched him suck my juices from his fingers as if it were honey.
“You taste so good, Gia. I can’t wait to get you back to your place so I can lay you on your back and bury my face between your thighs. Would you like that?”
“Yeah,” I breathed as I nodded slowly. He grabbed my hand and placed it between his legs. He wrapped my fingers around his cock and squeezed.
“I need you to touch me, Gia. I’m so hard right now,” he grunted as he shifted his weight.
“Right here, in the car?” I raised my eyebrows.
“Yeah, right now. I can’t wait.”
His cock felt so good in my hand. I couldn’t wait to get underneath his clothes. I reached under his shirt and caressed his nicely toned abs. His body was so fit. I loved it. I started to salivate as I unbuttoned and unzipped his pants. It was like I was unwrapping a delicious treat. He writhed in his seat as I softly grazed his delicate skin with the tips of my fingers. I spit in my palm before gently wrapping my fingers around the base of his cock and sliding my hand up and down in a slow rhythmic motion. I enjoyed the way the thickness of his cock felt in my hand. I could barely wrap my fingers around it. His breathing changed as I rubbed him harder and faster. I started to get wet again as I felt him get more turned on. I leaned over to try to take him in my mouth, but I couldn’t reach with my seat belt on. He grunted as I used my free hand to play with his balls.
“Oh, that feels so good. You’re going to make me come right here in my pants.” He glanced down as I continued to touch him. “Go ahead and finish me off, Gia,” he breathed. His muscles tensed as I rubbed the head of his cock with hard, fast strokes. He grunted and his body went rigid, and I felt him explode in my hand. He looked down as he continued to come. A bright flash of light caused me to look up onto the road. There was an SUV coming at us head-on. I felt like my stomach had jumped into my throat as the headlights seemed to get closer to us at lightning speed.
“Christoff! Watch out!” I shrieked as I squeezed his shoulder. I was shaking uncontrollably.
“Fuck!” He swerved the wheel hard. The force threw me off of his shoulder and against the passenger door. Our car slid horizontally across the road until we were perpendicular to the SUV racing at us. All at once I heard an earth-shattering crash and everything went black.
***
When I opened my eyes, I didn’t know what had happened. I felt something warm and sticky running across my forehead and down my cheek. I reached up and wiped my face with my hand. I shrieked in horror when I looked down to see my palm covered with my own blood. As soon as I saw the blood, I felt an excruciating pain shoot through my entire body. My head was throbbing, and I felt like I had snapped my neck. My heart was pounding
against my chest, and I thought I was going to throw up. I wiggled my toes to make sure I wasn’t paralyzed. My toes moved, but the effort made my body hurt more. I felt suffocated by the air bags. The smell of gunpowder hung in the air.
“Christoff?” I whimpered. I was so scared. He didn’t respond. I wanted to look over at him, but I couldn’t move my neck. I undid my seatbelt and slowly lifted my entire body up and flipped myself around so that I was facing the driver’s side of the car. As I shifted my weight, I realized that I was covered in glass. All of my senses were on a delay, and I was having trouble taking everything in. I closed my eyes to try to stop the pounding in my head. I was overwhelmed by physical pain and complete horror.
“Christoff!” I wailed. “What happened?” I opened my eyes and I saw Christoff slumped over the steering wheel covered in blood. His eyes were closed, and he wasn’t moving. The driver’s side of the car was completely crushed, and Christoff was wedged between broken glass and twisted metal. He was a little over 6’3” with broad shoulders, and he was all muscle. There was no way I would be able to get him out of there. I began to really panic. I wondered if he was still breathing. I reached out and touched him.
“Christoff, wake up! Christoff!?” I was crying hysterically. He was bleeding heavily, but I couldn’t tell from where. I needed to get help, but I couldn’t move. I felt sick as I looked over at Christoff lying there helplessly. My stomach heaved as I realized that I could be watching him die. I wished that I had just spoken up and asked him if he wanted to be with me before the accident happened. I was overcome with wracking sobs as I realized I might never have a chance to build a life with him. Everything was going so well tonight, and then it all changed in an instant. I needed to call 911, but I couldn’t find my purse. I tried to open the passenger door, but I couldn’t. I reached down and grabbed Christoff’s hand. It was warm but limp.
