“Thank you so much,” she said.
“I know you’ll do an excellent job of mayor and if you don’t,” she teased, “then I’ll write all about it in the paper.”
“I’m sure you will.”
They hugged, and then Kate scooped Josie out of Maxwell’s arms, and they set off through the town hall and outside.
“I can’t believe it’s over,” Kate said to Scott as they neared his truck. She felt her eyes mist over with tears at the thought of never again fixing a broken shelf or laying down bathroom tiles or nailing shingles onto a roof.
“It’s a new beginning, Katydid,” he said, wrapping his arm around her shoulder. “And you deserve it.”
“What are they going to call me now?”
“They can still call you Mrs. Fix It, only this time you’ll be keeping the whole town in good running order.”
She smiled and as she hopped into the passenger’s seat, she knew she was ready to start a brand new life.
