Crash Page 14

by David Wright

It’s almost easier for him to do nothing — to remain in a coma and live in blissful ignorance.

A feeling I think most people who live with anxiety and fear know all too well. Avoid the things that bring you pain, or might bring you pain, and just fly under the radar, and hope to get through life okay.

But what’s the point of a life lived in fear?

If you avoid things like other people, experiences, and love, just because you’re afraid then you’ve almost fulfilled your own fearful prophecies, right?

There’s a scene near the climax of the book where the man in black is arguing with Tom, telling him that there’s no guarantees in life. That the point of life isn’t to avoid pain, but rather pick up and carry on, and to help others through it.

We can easily get lost in our own worlds, our own pains, our own loss, our own fears, and our own stories. The world can be a cruel place, especially for us sensitive souls.

But when we hide from the big cruel world, we risk losing sight of those closest to us — those who need us most, even in our flawed, fucked-up states. As messed up as we may be, there may be someone to whom we are the world. And we owe it to them, if not ourselves, to face our fears and act in spite of them.

Because in the end, our minutes here are limited. So far as we know, we only get to do this thing called Life one time.

To me, living in fear isn’t really living. I feel like I’ve wasted far too many years living in fear. Time I will never get back. And that is a huge regret that can weigh on you as much as fear.

Would you rather spend your days living? Or hiding?

That is the question I wanted to ask with Crash. And while the ending is dark, I think there is a bit of hope there in what Tom chooses.

Thank you for joining us on this journey,

  David Wright
