Next, he popped the swab into the scanner and gave her a stunned look. “Can I scan you now?”

She nodded again and he pulled out a scanner that looked a bit like a gun. Moving it up and down, he looked at the readouts. The doctor seemed surprised, but then he dropped to his knees.

  “My princess.” He said.

“What do you mean Helag?” Roar asked.

“She has royal Mazlan DNA. She is the granddaughter of the former emperor.”

“What else is there?” Roar asked.

“She is also half Phoenix, but I can’t ascertain her family line.”

“I knew it.” Roar whispered, but Helag heard him.

  “How?” He asked.

“She had certain qualities. It made me wonder.” Roar admitted.

“Hey, you two! I’m right here and you’re discussing me as if I’m in another room.” Treva said. “And you, doctor?”

  “Yes, Ma’am?” Helag asked.

“Get off the floor right now. That’s disturbing.”

  Helag jumped up. “Yes, Princess.”

“I thought Mazlans didn’t recognize royalty anymore?” Treva questioned.

“That’s not exactly true. Your cousins, the ones that rule the planet, insist they are not kings or princes. The people still want them to be and treat them as such. A female royal, that is a wondrous thing.” Helag admitted.

“That brings us back to the how?” Treva asked.

“The Emperor had a daughter who supposedly died. He must have sold her to the lab. I heard she was a ball of fire. She constantly looked into things for the people and she was much loved. Your grandfather was crazy. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Also, power in Mazlans goes through the male line. I’m sure your family will embrace you. They have mates that yield power so they may grant you some,” Helag speculated.

“Power is the last thing that concerns me right now. I’ve just been freed from a life of confinement. I wish to find out who I am and how I came to be in the lab. Once I discover that, I wish to learn about my new world and what it is like. Eventually, I will wish to find my place in it where I can serve a useful purpose and live a happy life.” Treva declared.

Roar knew that Razar would be notified immediately. There was no doubt he and his family would want to claim her. Normally, he found it admirable that the Mazlans claimed their people and took care of them. This time he didn’t, because he wouldn’t be allowed to see her and that was unacceptable. He decided he would woo her and claim her before they made it to Oison. Once she was his, no one could take her away.

Wasn’t it funny how the threat of losing someone showed a person what they meant to them? He realized she was his mate and there was no doubt now. “I guess that’s all we’ll find out right now. You can go, Helag.” Roar directed. Helag looked unsure for a moment and then he nodded and left.

“I guess I’m finding out things about myself I never knew. It doesn’t seem to change who I am, though.” Treva whispered. He could see that she was confused and uncertain what this new information would mean.

“The Mazlans will want to bring you into the family, but my people will wish to claim you, too. In the end, the decision about what to do and where you’ll stay will be yours.” Roar explained.

“Are you sure? I’ve never been allowed to make a decision before.”

“I’m certain and I’ll make sure you’re allowed to decide.” Roar assured.

Treva wanted to believe him. She didn’t really know how much authority Roar had, but it seemed like it would take a lot to guarantee her free will. There was nothing else to do much to wait and see. Meanwhile, she had a week or more to try to learn all she could about Oison, the Phoenix, and everything else in what would be her new life.

“Can I spend some time in the library?”

“Sure. What do you want to do in there?”

“I’d like to learn about my family. The Mazlans and the Phoenix are in my blood and I want to learn more. I know very little. If I get a head start on this, I’ll know what to expect when I get there. That makes sense, doesn’t it?” Treva asked.

“It does make sense and I’ll answer any questions you have if I can. Come on.”

Roar led her out of the room and down the hall. They went to the elevator and headed up a floor. Once they were there, Roar showed her how to find the vids she wanted and where to play them before he left. She missed him when he wasn’t with her, but she was glad to be alone so she could think clearly.

  Chapter 8

  Royal Pain

Treva was royalty whether she thought so or not. Razar was treated as royalty as was his whole family, regardless of their thoughts on the matter too. That told Roar the people felt the need for a supreme power in their government that could do what needed done. They also seemed to have the need to dream about a group among them that had it all.

The humans felt that need too and they used the Mazlan royalty to satisfy it. All the princes had mated with females that were more or less human which had only encouraged it. Now the humans looked to the offspring of those princes to give hope of a royal marriage to their daughters. All royalty on Earth had fallen when Earth united under one president. Now their need to dream about someone who could raise the status of one of their own from abject poverty to up on a pedestal, had moved to the stars.

Cinderella now had to mate with an alien prince. Roar snorted to himself. Some might consider him a prince among his own people. Their numbers had stayed too low to be on Earth’s radar, but his people were wealthy beyond belief. They just didn’t flaunt, or even reveal the vast resources they had. It wasn’t worth attracting the bad elements of the universe. They’d almost been destroyed and had never fully recovered. How did he explain all that to Treva? Would his mating draw unwanted attention from royal watchers?

It seemed to him the whole world had gone mad. Roar wondered what they thought a combination of Phoenix and Mazlan blood would create. Treva was attractive and intelligent, but did she have abilities he wasn’t aware of? Could she regenerate or shift like a Phoenix or have qualities of a Mazlan? His people said Mazlans were demon shifters, whatever that was.

Treva had been sitting in the library for hours now and he intended to take her to lunch. Striding in that direction, he caught the elevator and soon stood outside the library scant minutes later. Roar took a deep breath and calmed himself before walking in with a smile on his face. He saw Treva right away and he felt like he’d been hit with a brick. How had he not immediately known what she was to him?

“Have you been learning a lot?”

“Yes, as far as the Mazlans go. There’s very little about the Phoenix on here.”

“Maybe I’ll give you access to some of our information after lunch. Meanwhile, I bet you’re hungry.”

“I could eat.” Treva said and her stomach growled like a monster.

Roar looked at her. “Your stomach agrees. It’s time to hunt down some food.”

He escorted her to the cafeteria where they managed to run into Blaze again. “Hey, you two. I heard you got some news.” Blaze hinted.

“You spoke to Helag?” Roar asked.

“Yes, he said he did some testing. Do I have to drag it out of you?”

  “Didn’t he tell you?”

“No, only that he tested her and there were some interesting results.”

“Not my story to tell.” Roar said and Blaze looked at Treva.

“Are you trustworthy?” She asked. “I know the information will get out, but I’m in no rush for it to.”

“I’ll not say anything.” Blaze assured her.

  “I am part Phoenix.”

  “You’re shitting?”

  “What?”

“I mean, are you kidding me?” Blaze clarified.

“No, that was one of the things Helag told me.”

  “What else?” Blaze questioned.

“One more thing, I’m Mazlan royalty.”

“They’ll be glad to hear abou
t you,” Blaze said.

  “Why does everyone think that?”

“They embrace their people in general and their families in particular. Mazlans are also honorable. Most people like the princes and their mates, and their parents. You’ll be surrounded by your family when you’re there.” Blaze offered.

“That sounds nice. I’ve never had a family, not a real one, before. Some of us were close, but if the guards thought we made friends, they separated us.” Treva admitted.

“You won’t have to live like that ever again.” Roar assured her. A sharp blaring sound shrieked over the loud speakers. “What’s happening?”

“Some of the pirates escaped their cages. They are trying to get to the bay. I’m going to help cut them off,” Blaze explained.

“I’ll stay with Treva and protect her,” Roar explained.

“Why do I need protection?” Treva asked.

“They were after you. That’s why they were here. We need to keep that in mind.”

Treva looked stunned which made him believe she had forgotten that the pirates had been hunting her. “What now?”

“We’ll stay away from the ship’s jail and the bay. That should keep us out of danger,” Roar suggested. “Let’s head back to our room.”

Treva got up and he grabbed her hand as he led her that way. The alarm was still going off and he assumed that meant the pirates hadn’t been restrained. Normally, he’d be the one in charge of bringing order and catching the criminals. The reason he wasn’t, was this wasn’t his usual ship and he was assigned to Treva until they reached Oison. Her situation had been unique even before they knew more about her.

He pulled her into the hall that led to their room when someone stepped out of doorway. “Who are you? What do you want?”

“Just let me have the girl.” The man replied.

“You can’t have her and if you don’t step back, you will be hurt.” Roar threatened.

“You’re unarmed and I have a laser gun. I’ll kill you and take her anyway.”

“Just try,” Roar taunted. Heat lit him up until he thought he would go super nova.

  “What the hell are you?”

  “Something you’ve never seen before.”

The guy tried to shoot at him, but was so frightened he didn’t even hit him. The shot hit the wall and sizzled leaving a scorching black mark. He tripped in his hurry and Roar caught him in seconds. Roar’s skin was cool and safe to touch.

“You were on fire.” The pirate accused.

“You must be on some good drugs.”

“I know what I saw. There were flames.” He insisted.

Treva was silent and watchful. Blaze came around the corner at a dead run and almost ran into them as he tried to stop. “Thank all that’s holy you got him. We captured the others and questioned them. Treva has a tracker the doctor will have to remove. He was to kill her if he couldn’t get her off the ship. Did you have to reveal yourself to get him?” Blaze asked.

“Yes. You’ll have to take care of him. I need to talk to Treva and tell her some things.” Roar explained.

“You bet you do.” Treva added. Blaze grabbed the pirate lifting him off the floor by his shirt. Phoenixes were strong and Treva noticed that too.

As Blaze carried the prisoner away, Roar took Treva’s hand and led her to their room. He unlocked the door and held it open until she moved inside then he stepped in and closed the door. Roar looked at her as she stared at him waiting for answers.

“I saw what you did. How is that even possible?” Treva asked.

“You studied the legends of the Phoenix. We are tied to fire at a molecular level. I’m not sure what powers you might have. If you are half Phoenix, you might have all our powers.”

“Wouldn’t I know if I could catch fire?”

“You’ve been too busy trying to survive to search inside yourself and see what’s there. Most of our powers have to be harnessed. They are too dangerous to just manifest on their own. Our people would have wiped themselves out if those powers just hit at a certain age. Once you learn discipline, you can search for your own flame.”

“I saw you on fire. That can’t be as simple as you make it sound. What else don’t I know about you?”

“We are basically immortal as far as aging and disease goes. Phoenix are usually killed by violence, but it isn’t easy to kill us. If we are in our fiery form, few things can touch us. In our human form, we are more vulnerable.”

“Why don’t you stay in your fiery form?”

“It takes massive amounts of energy to stay in that form. We are also dangerous to other races in that form.”

“Do Phoenixes really burn up and rise from the ashes like the legend say?”

“No. We do rejuvenate when we take our fiery form. I don’t know how that ashes story came to be. If we die, we are gone for good.”

Roar sat on the bed next to Treva and they talked for an hour before she seemed to drift off. She jerked awake and looked embarrassed.

“You’ve been through so much. Why don’t we just take a nap and see if it doesn’t make us feel better?”

“This isn’t just for me, is it?”

“Absolutely not. I love to hold you and this is a good excuse.”

Treva turned a lovely shade of pink that made him want to see where the color stopped. It went down her neck as far as he could see. “Okay. Let me put on something more comfortable and we can give the nap a try.”

She headed to the bathroom to change. Roar just stripped down to his underwear and waited wondering what she would change into. When she came back in a thin blue nightgown, he gave her an appreciative look.

“Come here!” Roar instructed and she did. He pulled her into his arms and kissed her sweet lips. “Let’s take that nap now.” He pulled back the blankets and slipped under them before he held out his arms so she could slide in next to him and snuggle. They fell asleep quickly which was a surprise.

Roar woke up and immediately remembered where he was and what had led up to it. Treva was still sleeping, but she was restless. That was probably why he’d woke. That was okay because he had a delightful female pressed up against him and his body was fully awake and ready for anything.

His hands and mouth itched to touch her and his cock was as hard as steel. Roar traced his fingers down her arm and she shivered and moaned. He moved the hand to a nipple that pressed against her nightgown and he pinched it lightly. Her eyes flew open and she stared at him. The blue looked darker because of her desire. It was so strong it scented the whole room.

“I want you so much. Say you want me too!” Roar demanded.

“I want you too. Right now, Roar!” Treva voiced her own command and her hand reached out to stroke his hard shaft.

The need in her voice rolled over him like a tidal wave. He ripped the nightgown from her delicious body in one move. The sound of the fabric ripping only seemed to increase the heat both of them were feeling. Slipping off his underwear, his cock wept with the knowledge they were both naked. Roar moved to take her in his arms and Treva moved closer to him at the same time.

Their bodies touched and the flames of desire caught them. Nothing had ever felt so good as holding Treva in his arms and he knew she was his fated one. Did she realize it? Did she even believe in fated mates? If not, he would have to convince her before the ship docked at the Oison space station or he might lose her forever.

Roar shook with need, but also with the fear of what his life would be like without her. Phoenixes had been known to erupt in flames and shoot up into the sky like fireworks never to be seen again when they lost their special one. That wasn’t the future he had planned for himself.

He brushed his lips lightly over hers following with his tongue. Her lips parted like an invitation and he thrust his tongue inside. Her tongue met his shyly, but they dueled and he loved her taste. It added to the already heated situation. That also made him realize he loved her. There was still much to learn about his mate, but what he’d
learned so far convinced him she was perfect for him.

Her hand moved to his cock, stroking it and a drop of cum formed on the end. She moved a finger to catch it before it fell and she licked it off with her tongue. That was so fucking sexy!

  Chapter 9

  Fated Mating

She was lost in the pleasure Roar gave her. Treva had discovered that Phoenixes rarely helped with the lab raids. That Roar would be there was an amazing twist of fate. Could he be right and it showed they were meant to be together? Fated mates were not something Treva knew anything about except what she had recently read and been told by Roar or Blaze.

Treva did believe in the complete bliss Roar could give her. She also believed in the way they could relate to each other. If they weren’t friends now by someone’s definition, they continued to grow closer and soon would be. Roar was gorgeous, smart, and personable. He was everything she could imagine wanting in a male. So why didn’t she just jump into the relationship he clearly wanted?

That was a crazy question. Recently, she’d been imprisoned with no contact with the opposite sex to speak of. Her life had been one of misery and isolation. There was nothing to compare Roar or their relationship with. It would be so easy to jump in quickly and regret her decision later.

Of course when they were having sex like now wouldn’t be one of the times she would regret. Roar had slid down her body and his face was between her legs. His hot breath hit her damp nether lips and drove her crazy. All thoughts of pretty much anything except seeking release fled.

“Hm, you smell so sweet. I want to gobble you up.” Roar said making her body send more honey between her thighs for him. He took a deep breath which made her blush. Why did she still blush after they had been together? It wasn’t like he hadn’t seen every inch of her. She’d seen him as well.

Her questions flew out of her mind as his hot, wet tongue danced over her pussy. “Argh!” She moaned as his tongue slid inside her. He began tongue fucking her vigorously and she arched up to encourage him to continue.
