“Everything okay, baby?” I heard Hades say.
I turned to see Hades walking towards me from the temple with a look of concern on his gorgeous face. I smiled broadly at the sight of him and nodded. “Yeah, I’m just thinking.”
Once he reached me, he plopped down beside me and took my hands into his. “What are you thinking about?”
“My mom,” I whispered sullenly. Hades took a deep breath and nodded in understanding, even though I could see the loathing he was trying to keep hidden behind his eyes.
“Ah. Her,” he said matter-of-factly. I nodded once more.
“Yeah. I’ve just been wondering if she’s okay. Tisiphone had mentioned that the winter that’s going on in the mortal realm right now is the worst she’s ever seen. That means my mom is probably going through some pretty serious depression because of me.” I let my gaze fall to our hands as I spoke.
I knew that I had no reason to care about my mother or to blame myself, but I did so anyway. No matter what evil my mother may have done, she was still my mother. I couldn’t just stop caring about her regardless of how much I tried. She had been there for me my entire life, even if it was as a warden. I just wanted to know that she was okay.
“Do you want to go see her?” Hades asked, bringing my attention back to him.
“Would that be okay?” I asked, almost afraid to meet his gaze.
Hades shifted uncomfortably before he let out a deep sigh. He squeezed my hand lightly before he said, “Marry me.”
I gasped as I looked up at him in shock. “What?”
“Marry. Me.” Hades flashed me a boyish grin as he waved a large hand over mine and manifested a gorgeous black diamond ring onto my left hand. I felt the air leave my lungs in a rush as I gazed down at the incredible ring.
“Hades,” I breathed. “Are you serious?”
“Deadly,” he replied with a chuckle. He reached over and placed his index finger under my chin, then lifted my eyes to meet his. “Persephone, I love you. I have never loved anyone in my life, and I didn’t think I ever would until I first saw you in the club. The moment that our eyes met, I knew that I wouldn’t be able to breathe without you next to me. When Hermes took you away from me, I thought I was going to die. I was worried about what was going to happen to you without me there to protect you.
“But you grew during the time that we were dating, and I didn’t even realize it. You rescued yourself while I was getting my ass handed to me left and right. You are so strong, Seph. You light up everything you touch, including my little black heart. I can’t lose you again. I want you to be my queen forever.”
I was breathless at his words. I wanted nothing more than to be his queen. While Hades was busy praising me for my personal growth, he didn’t realize that he was the reason behind it. He gave me the space and support that I needed to grow as a person. Without him, I would still be the shy little nobody from Olympus. And it wasn’t like he hadn’t grown right along with me.
Hades had opened his heart to more people around him in just this last month than he had in his entire lifetime. He had several close friends and enjoyed venturing into the mortal realm to have a good time. He didn’t lock himself away in fear or anger anymore. Everything he loved so deeply about me, I loved about him. And I wasn’t willing to lose him either.
“I accept.” I beamed.
Hades flashed me a toothy grin as she pulled me into his arms for a deep embrace. “Yeah?”
“Yeah!” I replied.
He crushed his lips against mine, then hugged me tightly to his chest. I had never felt happier in my entire life than I did at this moment. It was pure perfection. That is, until Hades pulled out of the embrace and sat me back down onto the floor. With a flick of his wrist, Hades had conjured a deliciously plump pomegranate into his hand. He held it out to me and grinned like a toddler who had just been given a lollipop. I raised a brow and smiled.
“I already ate lunch,” I said with a chuckle. Hades rolled his eyes.
“No, weirdo,” he began, “If you eat a few of the seeds in this, then you can come and go from the underworld as you please. I figure a queen should be able to travel without restrictions, don’t you?”
I gasped as I took the pomegranate into my unsteady hands. Breathless, I whispered, “I don’t even know what to say, Hades.”
Hades hopped back onto his feet and extended a hand to me. With my free hand, I took it and allowed him to help me stand. Once I was on my feet, Hades swept me off the ground and held me to his chest. He smiled down at me and placed a quick kiss on my forehead, then started to walk towards the temple.
“But before my queen leaves me, I think we should enjoy several hours of hot, sweaty sex just in case your mother doesn’t allow you to come back home right away. Can’t take any chances, right?” he said with a laugh.
I threw my head back in laughter as Hades carried me over the threshold of our home. With a playful nip of his chin, I smiled up at him and replied, “I couldn’t agree more, my love.”
