“I see, about what exactly?” I said, struggling to place the name.

“I hired your firm to find Mr. Tibbs over a month ago and you’ve done absolutely nothing. Call yourselves detectives? It’s a disgrace.”

  “Mr. Tibbs?”

“Your assistant promised to do everything she could to find him and I never heard from her again. And when I called your office the girl there told me you were both away − in Missouri of all places.”

  “Well yes, we…”

“I’m not interested in listening to your excuses,” she said. “I was intending to make a formal complaint to…whoever it is you complain to in cases like this. However, fortunately for you Mr. Tibbs has returned of his own free will so I’m prepared to let the matter rest there. I hope you’re not planning to send me a bill.” She hung up.

“Lucy,” I said in the direction of the kitchen, “who’s Mr. Tibbs?”

She leaned over the kitchen counter and smiled mischievously at me.

“The missing cat,” she said. “Remember?”
