Ty was proud of Cheyenne and the way she spoke to her mother. It wasn’t a close, loving relationship, but she was being very respectful, and he was proud.
The front doorbell rang and Clay went to answer it. He returned a minute later. “Guess who I found!” They all looked up as Ty’s grandfather walked into the room.
Ty and Cheyenne were both quickly up from their seats to give him a hug. “Grandpa, it’s so good to see you,” Ty said as he pulled away from his embrace. “We weren’t expecting you until tomorrow.”
“I got an early flight,” he said with a chuckle. “I couldn’t stay away, knowing Timothy and Marjorie were down here. I just had to know how things were going.”
Cheyenne was anxious to answer. “Things are going great!”
Ted saw the smiles in her eyes and Ty’s and knew things were indeed good.
Sam came over and shook Ted’s hand, saying, “Good to see you again, Ted. Have a seat. I’ve still got that extra room upstairs. You’re welcome to stay here.”
Ty said, “I’ve got room at my house, too, Grandpa.”
“Ty, that’s got a nice ring to it; your house,” Ted said. “I’m proud of you, finding a wonderful little lady to be your wife, and buying your own ranch.”
“I couldn’t be any prouder, either.” Timothy added quickly.
Sam shook his head. “No, I feel like I own the market on proud. I had the pleasure of watching Ty grow from a good ranch hand into the best foreman I’ve ever had, and that’s saying something because I’ve had several good foremen over the years. Now he’s moved from foreman to his own ranch, and my son-in-law! And I couldn’t be any prouder of Cheyenne. She grew from wandering aimlessly around the ranch, not knowing what she wanted to do, to getting her MBA, good plans for a career she’ll enjoy, and marrying the man I got to watch grow into a fine rancher. And on top of that, my son, who’s doing a fine job running this ranch, has just married a wonderful lady. Now there’s proud!”
Ty and Cheyenne both turned red, but everyone laughed at the proud papa look on Sam’s face. “I think this would be a good time for a toast,” Clay suggested. He and Sam got drinks for everyone, mostly wine, and Clay raised his glass for a simple toast. “To Ty and Cheyenne!”
They all took a sip, and the conversation started again. Everyone was enjoying themselves.
Cheyenne looked around the room at all the family who meant more to her than she’d realized, and how happy everyone was. She looked over at Ty, who was watching her. She spoke quietly. “Everything is fantastic, and I’m going to be fine, aren’t I?”
“You certainly are, honey. I’ll be right here to make sure of it!”
“All I have to do is just keep listening to my smart cowboy.”
She looked over at Ted, who had been watching them, and winked at her.
She snuggled in a little closer to her future husband and relaxed against his shoulder, feeling more content and confident than she’d ever felt before.
