“Blessing?” Laya’s mouth dropped open.
“Alright, it was more like he grudgingly said alright and warned me that if I fucked up your life, I would pay.”
“How romantic.”
“I thought so. When we start having kids, I’ll be the same way. Any daughter of mine is only going to have the best. I’ll run guys like me off before they have a chance to ruin her life.”
Laya giggled. He loved the sound of her laugh. “Well in that case, I’ve already said yes, but I’ll say yes again. I love you, Jay. I knew that when I met you, I was done.”
“That also sounds very romantic.”
“I mean, I was… well- you know. I’ve never wanted anyone else. It’s always been you. It’s always going to be you. For the rest of my life.”
“I hope that we can make that promise with certainty. I used to make fun of people who got married. I thought marriage vows were ridiculous. How can you promise for years and years into the future when you don’t know what life holds or how you’ll change?”
“I know that whatever it holds, I’ll love you. That’s my promise. Just as you are, because to me, you’re perfect.”
“I’m far from that.”
“That’s why I said to me.”
“Come here.” Jay held out his arms. Laya rushed into them. She tipped her face and he peppered her lips, her jaw, her chin with kisses before he finally claimed her mouth again in a scorching kiss that left them both breathless. “Leave the dress for an hour?”
“I’ll have to now. If you just wanted to get laid, you could have said so. I would never turn you down, no matter how much work I have to do before tomorrow morning.”
“Well then. I’ll have to make it half an hour.”
“Make it an hour and you can help me finish up the dress.” Laya’s eyes darkened and her lips pursed up seductively.
“Great. I’ll get the roll of tape out. It’s far faster than sewing.”
“You did a good job of sewing that ring up there. You even used the right color thread. I’m very, very proud of you.”
“Not as proud as you’re going to be. An hour it is.” Jay swept Laya up in his arms and carried her from the room. Dress forgotten, she clung to his neck. He closed his eyes, savoring that exact moment. The moment she saw the ring, the love shining in her eyes, the wonderment every single time she looked at him. He never imagined he’d offer the rest of his life and mean it, but with her, he did. Bring on the old age, bring on all the trials between then and now. With the woman he loved at his side, he knew he could face anything at all.
