Apparently they weren’t done with their conversation yet. I turned around and wanted to take another walk around the garden, but Ryoko had noticed me. “Melanie, you can stay, we’re done here.” He was angry alright, but apparently not with me, for he put an arm around me and squeezed my shoulder in appreciation. “I heard that you had to save yourself again. I’m proud of you, little dragon.” He had spoken German, as I could gather from Michael’s defensive glare when he’d dropped his potshot. The dragon continued to chat with me for a short while longer, before he had to leave again. As soon as Ryoko was out of earshot, I faced Michael and asked warily: “Is there a problem? Am I in trouble?” His Peris were acting strangely, slinking away or avoiding eye contact.
Michael took me into his arms and kissed me on the forehead. “No, my precious.”
And I knew he was lying.
