“They told me the autopsy didn’t come up with anything at all. Rose Sharon was just dead, they said.” He looked Mary Jean straight in the eye then and she saw his eyes were still very sad and very wet. “They said it didn’t appear to be suicide at all and except for the letters, they wouldn’t have considered suicide—on the death report, they just called it ‘undetermined.’ All they could say from what their autopsy showed was that she died of natural causes.” He shrugged again. “Apparently, her heart just stopped.”
“But how could that be? Rose was so young and she was perfectly healthy,” Mary Jean argued. “Wasn’t she?”
Leo shrugged again. He finished sorting the canned goods before he turned to look at her, shaking his head. “She was before Jack Nash died in her arms. I think maybe her heart broke then. I think maybe she died of a broken heart.”
