It was officers like Max, and the others, who put their lives on the line every day.
“Oh, this is my stop.” She was about to reach for the pole, but Max caught her hand and helped her up. He held her hand for a moment longer than he needed to and then cupped her elbow as they left the subway.
“Which way?” Max asked when they reached the street level.
“To the right.” The neighborhood where she and Anna lived wasn’t the best, but it wasn’t the worst. Much better than what they’d had before, thanks to Anna’s parents helping them. “I hope I’m not taking you too far out of your way.”
“You’re not.” Max didn’t let on where he lived, and despite her curiosity, she didn’t push.
When they reached her building, she expected him to leave her at the front door, but he and Sam followed her inside. They took the elevator to the second floor of the three-story building.
“This way,” she said, turning toward the apartment she shared with Anna. As she was about to put her key in the lock, Sam forced his way in front of her and sat directly by the door, his gaze locked on some imaginary spot. She glanced down at the K-9 in surprise. “What is he doing?”
“Stay back.” Max put his arm out to prevent her from going any farther. “Sam is alerting on the door.”
“Alerting why?”
Max’s gaze was grim. “He’s trained to sniff out bombs.”
Bombs? The floor undulated beneath her feet, and she reached out to brace herself against the wall. First the stabbing attempt and now this? A possible bomb?
What did it all mean?
