“Madeline.” Helen says, looking at Maddie with dark, serious eyes, making her squirm a little bit. “Nothing should happen. You need to quit seeing him before something does happen.”
“He’s a really nice guy, ma’am…” Maddie defends agian.
“Maybe now, but he’s not one of us.” Helen starts. “Baby, how many richies do you see around this little town? Just him, right? There’s a reason for that. They’re too good for us and we don’t need ‘em anyway.”
“It’s not like that, Helen.” She says, angrily. “He’s not like that, I’m telling you!”
“Maddie, put it out of your mind.” Helen says, walking away to her back office. “That’s just not how the world works.”
Maddie looks down, biting her bottom lip as she grabs an order pad and stuffs it in the front pocket of her apron. She looks up and over to where Dominic last sat, before feeling tears well. She squeezes her green eyes closed.
“This isn’t fair.” She whispers to herself, picking up her rag and wiping it along the counter.
She hears the front bell ding, first customer of the day, and she does her best to fake a smile.
“I’ll be with you in just a second!” She shouts cheerfully.
The day was long and the tips were poor. Sometimes she really does wonder what she’s working for.
She enters her apartment and a rich smell hits her nose.
“Dennis?” She calls out. “Is that you?”
“I’m in the kitchen.” A deep voice replies.
Maddie tosses her coat on the chair by the door and wanders into the kitchen. She sees Dennis in front of the stove, stirring the contents of a pot with a wooden spoon.
“Are you making dinner?” She asks quietly, amazed.
“I got off early, I figured I would.” He says, looking over at her. “Look at what I brought you. On the table.”
Maddie turns to look at their kitchen table, her eyes welling up as she spots a bundle of daisies in a vase that wasn’t there before.
“For me?” She asks. “Why?”
“I can’t get you something nice without you questioning it?” He asks from beside the stove.
“Thank you, baby.” She whispers, walking over to the table.
She reaches out, touching the petals before walking over to her boyfriend by the stove.
“Thank you.” She whispers again, wrapping her arms around him.
“Go sit down.” He says. “It’ll be ready right away.”
She walks back over to the kitchen table and leans in, smelling the flowers before sitting down. Maddie jumps slightly in her seat as her phone vibrates in her pocket. She looks over at Dennis before quietly pulling it out of her pocket.
The illuminated screen reads Dominic’s number. Her heart flutters as she stuffs her phone back in her pocket, ignoring his call. She couldn’t do that again to Dennis, they were going through a tough time right now, but she knows they’ll make it. He’s not all bad.
Chapter 5
Maddie sits in her and Dennis’s bathroom on the edge of the tub, tears quietly flowing down her cheeks. It’s been weeks since that night she spent with Dominic and she’s all but forgotten about it, but for the past few days it’s been on her mind once again.
She sniffles, using the back of her hand to wipe the wetness from her face before looking down at the positive pregnancy test wrapped tightly in her fingers.
“What have I done.” She whispers to herself, shutting her eyes tightly, a small sob escaping her throat.
Maddie knows this isn’t Dennis’s baby. These past few weeks with Dennis have been some of the best they’ve ever had together, but he’s still made very clear she’s not ready to be a wife or a mother. They always use protection. He is extra careful because he wants his child to have a mother who knows what she’s doing.
She opens her green pools, looking once more at the little double lines on the test stick before glancing up at the bathroom counter at her phone.
“I have to call him.” She whispers to herself, before reaching over and grabbing her phone.
She unlocks the screen before scrolling through her contacts. Her thumb hesitates over Dominic’s number, her mind flashing back to the very first time she called him. He takes a deep breath and presses down before holding the phone up to her ear.
She bites her bottom lip as she hears the line ring before a cheerful voice answers.
Hey, This is Dominic. You just missed me, leave a message.
Her voice quivers as she hears the beep.
“Dominic? Hey, this is Maddie. I know we kind of… lost contact, but something really important has come up. I need to talk to you. I work this afternoon, if you could come down. I just… really need to see you.”
She hits the end button before dropping her phone to the carpet below her and breaking down in sobs.
She really doesn’t want to be at work today. She would have called in sick except for the chance that Dominic gets her message and comes to see her.
“Right on time!” She hears Helen call out to her from the kitchen as she walks in the front door. “You’re on a roll lately.”
Maddie walks over to Helen, before looking up at her with tired, puffy eyes.
“Sweetie, what’s wrong.” The older woman asks, her expression changing quickly.
“Helen.” Maddie whispers. “I’m pregnant.”
“Really!?” Helen asks, a smile growing on her face. “Well, this isn’t bad news, Maddie.”
Maddie shakes her head, looking down at her shoes.
“It’s not Dennis’s.” She whispers.
“Maddie.” Helen whispers back. “What do you mean it’s not Dennis’s.”
“It’s Dominic’s.” She says, biting on her bottom lip.
“Dominic’s?” Helen asks. “Richie Rich?”
Maddie nods her head, looking up at her boss, tears once again wetting her cheeks.
“What did I tell you, Maddie?” Helen says, looking up at the ceiling as she leans against the counter. “You think someone like him has time for someone like you?!”
“What am I going to do?” Maddie asks, biting her thumb nail between her teeth.
“Well, I don’t know, baby, what do you expect me to say?” Her boss asks, looking at her. “You think he’s just going to give up whatever it is he does and he’s gunna swoop in and live a happily ever after life with you? No he’s gunna pay you to go to way and that’s about it.”
“I called him and asked him to come down.” She whispers, knowing in the back of her mind that Helen is right.
“And he is?” Her manager asks, raising her eyebrow.
“I don’t know, I got his voice mail.” Maddie replies.
“Well.” Helen says, sucking her teeth before standing up straight and turning around. She looks over her shoulder back at Maddie. “Good luck.”
Chapter 6
Maddie sighs deeply as she finishes wiping down the final table before running the back of her hand over her tired eyes. She walks behind the counter, folding the rag and placing it in the sink.
“Well I guess he’s not coming.” She whispers to herself as she reaches around behind her to untie her apron.
A bright flash of light catches her eye and she looks up, squinting, to see head lights shining through the diner’s windows.
Her heart flutters, pounding in her chest as the car’s headlights turn off, revealing a long stretch limo with a shiny black paint job. It’s Dominic.
Maddie tosses her apron on the counter, before rushing over to the diner’s front door. She turns the latch, unlocking the glass before opening it up. She bites on her bottom lip nervously as she watches Dominic step out of the back seat.
“Maddie!” He says, shutting the car door as he walks toward her. “You never called me back!”
“Yes, I did.” She says, a smile forming across her lips. She’s so happy to see him. “It just took a while.”
“I was worried I would never see you again.”
He says quietly as he wraps his thick, strong arms around her. “What happened between us, did I do something wrong?”
“No, Dominic.” She starts, resting her head on his chest, listening to his heart beat as they stand in the door way. “You didn’t do anything wrong at all.”
Dominic smiles down at her softly, before kissing the top of her forehead.
“You needed to talk to me?” He whispers to her quietly.
“Yeah.” She says, nodding her head into his warm embrace. “Come inside.”
She unwraps herself from Dominic’s arms before grabbing his hand. Maddie leads him into the diner, walking him to the back of the restaurant before sitting him down in a more private booth.
The lights are dim, almost nothing is shining on them besides the street lights outside.
Dominic sits down, looking up at Maddie as she sits in the booth across from him.
“You look tired, baby.” He whispers to her, grabbing her hand from across the table. “What’s wrong?”
Maddie’s bottom lip quivers as tears begin to well in her eyes.
“Dominic, I don’t even know how to tell you.” She starts, hanging her head down low. “I’m sorry I haven’t called you.”
“That’s okay.” He whispers, squeezing her hand in his.
“I just… it’s not supposed to be like this.” She says. “I have a boyfriend.”
“I know.” He whispers. “If you want what we had to be a one-time thing, that’s okay, I don’t know why you want to be with him, but just tell me, Maddie….”
“But I don’t want it to be a one-time thing.” She whispers, looking up at Dominic, the tears streaming down her face. “I’ve never been happier than when I’m with you. Even now, even with this…” She whispers, bringing her hand up to her face to brush away the tears. “There isn’t any other place I would rather be right now...”
“Then what’s wrong?” Dominic whispers back to her confused. “I don’t want you to cheat on your boyfriend with me, Maddie…”
“I can’t leave Dennis, Dominic, I just can’t.” She whispers, looking out the window. “But I don’t want to be with him anymore.”
“Be with me, Maddie.” Dominic leans forward over the table, as he whispers to her. “Be with me. You deserve so much better than you have right now and I can give you everything you could ever want.”
Maddie softly smiles at him with her tired eyes, before looking down at the table once more.
“Dominic.” She whispers quietly. “I’m pregnant.”
She squeezes her eyes shut as she hears Dominic stand, letting her tears fall to the table. Maddie bites her bottom lip, as he lets go of her hand.
“I’m sorry.” She says, bringing her hand up to cover her face.
“Don’t be.” Dominic whispers, walking over to her.
He sits down in the booth beside her, wrapping her arms around her shaking body.
Dominic brings his hand up to Maddie’s chin, cupping it, before turning up her face to look at him.
“Maddie, I’ll do the right thing.” He whispers, his soft blue eyes looking into her green ones. “I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”
She buries her face into his shoulder as sobs over take her.
Dominic rocks her back and forth, looking down at her before placing a small kiss on her forehead once more. “I told you already, I can give you everything.”
Chapter 7
Maddie shivers as she hangs up her winter jacket on the coat rack in the front of the diner.
“Winter came too quickly.” She says leaning over the counter watching Helen count the float.
“But don’t you just love a fresh snow?” Helen says enthusiastically, looking out the diner’s windows. “Covers up all the imperfections.”
“Yeah, I guess.” Maddie says as she grabs an apron from behind the counter.
She wraps hit around her waist before smoothing her palms over her little round belly.
“Well, look at that.” Helen says turning around. “That apron isn’t doing a very good job at hiding it anymore.”
“I still think I look okay.” Maddie says, looking down at her little bump. “But no, you’re right, I’m going to be big sooner than I know.”
“And you still haven’t told Dennis. Your boyfriend. How you just not going to tell him?” Helen says, before shutting the till drawer. “Maddie, baby, the longer you keep this secret, the worse it’s going to be for you.”
“I know.” Maddie whispers. “I just don’t know how. Every time I think of it I freeze. I’m scared about it, ma’am.”
“Well, why don’t you just get your new man to do it for you.” Helen bites back, before looking up at the dinging diner door. “Speak of the devil.”
Maddie turns around, watching as Dominic’s limo pulls into the parking lot and he lets himself out the of back seat. He walks through the thin snowy cover on the ground, dinging the bell as he opens the door.
“Dominic!” Maddie smiles, walking over to him. “What are you doing here?”
She sinks into his chest as she feels his winter chilled arms wrap around her.
“I came for some breakfast from my girl.” Dominic says smiling, before reaching down and brushing his palm over Maddie’s growing belly. “And how are the two of you?”
“Tired.” She whispers, smiling before pointing down to her belly. “And grumpy.”
Dominic squeezes Maddie tightly, before placing a kiss on her cheek. Maddie holds his hand as she seats him at their table in the back.
“Coffee for you?” She asks, flipping over a cup to pour some of the hot brew into.
“Thank you.” He whispers, reaching for the sugar. “So, Maddie?”
“Mhm.” She says, pouring his coffee.
“When do you get off work today?” He asks. “Because I want to take you out.”
“You want to take me out? To do what?” She laughs, before sitting down in the booth across from him. “By the time I’m off work, I’m going to be so tired. My feet ache already.”
“I don’t know.” Dominic says, taking a sip from his coffee. “You’re just sitting here with my child and I still haven’t gotten the chance to show you a nice time.”
“Well okay.” Maddie smiles, standing up to put the coffee pot back on the burner. “I’ll let you show me a nice time.”
Maddie sits by the front door of the diner, her feet tired as she watches Helen wipe the counters.
“Where are you going tonight?” Helen asks, looking over at a tired Maddie.
“He didn’t say.” Maddie says, rubbing her palm over her belly. “I guess it’s a surprise.”
“Must be nice to have someone take you out for surprises.” Helen comments, moving over to another table and spraying it with sanitizer.
“Yeah, it kind of is.” Maddie whispers, smiling to herself as she sees the long, black limo pull into the parking lot.
She hops up from her seat, opening the glass door before turning around to wave goodbye to her boss.
Maddie opens the back passenger side door, smiling at the driver as she cuts him off, before sliding into the back seat.
“For you.” Dominic smiles as he hands Maddie a styrofoam cup. “Mint chocolate chip milkshake. Figured you could use something sweet, right?”
“How did you know?” Maddie whispers, looking up at Dominic before leaning in to kiss his cheek. “Thank you.”
They leave the limo in a small parking lot downtown and briskly walk through the falling snow as the street lamps leave their glow on everything.
“Movie?” Dominic asks. “I could buy out the whole theater if you wanted, then it could be just the two of us.”
“I’ve never had a theatre to myself before.” Maddie giggles as she stands on her toes in front of the tall, blue eyed man and presses her lips against his. “But I think I’d like that.” She whispers before kissing him again.
“And then maybe some dinner?” Dominic asks, blushing as Maddie lets go of his lips
. “I’ll take you anywhere and then I have kind of a special surprise for you tonight.”
“A surprise?” Maddie asks with a whisper. “Like what?”
“I don’t know…” Dominic starts, wrapping his arm around her shoulder as they walk. “But I hope you say ‘yes’.”
