Rollison had come to tell the whole story. He finished with a grin and a flourish.
‘Katrina and Derek have gone to Hungary, Derek’s at the Embassy there, and they are quite gloriously happy. And as you know, Tippets and Florence, got life sentences a week ago, as well as Jacobson and Gordon, all as accessories to the murder. The relics are back in their Siamese temple. Old Glory is secretly delighted because she is sure that I am what she calls “myself again”, and Jolly and I are congratulating ourselves because you’ll soon be back at the Yard.’
Grice laughed.
‘Whoever is at the Yard, you’ll do what takes your fancy, as you’ve always done.’
‘Unkind,’ chided Rollison.
‘But true. I haven’t quite followed the part which Jacobson and Lorne played,’ Grice said, dismissing badinage. ‘They bought and sold stolen jewels, of course—’
‘They did more,’ said Rollison, ‘they ran a smash-and-grab gang, and they sold through commission agents like Mary Henderson. They were financed by Tippets, who always had plenty of money, but was just’ – he shrugged his shoulders – ’bad inside and outside, shall we say? Florence wasn’t much better. Lorne and Jacobson were demanding too much, and this last minute plan to polish them off at Gresham Terrace appealed to both Tips and Florence. Katrina first spoiled it by refusing ice-cream, and I fancy that Lorne or Jacobson discovered what was up, and probably startled Florence into dropping the whole tube into the bucket before he left.’
‘Then why was Jacobson afterwards so loyal?’
Rollison said: ‘Oh, come! His one chance was that Derek would be found guilty of the crimes. He didn’t worry about being sent down on robbery and receiving charges, but murder had to be avoided. So he tried to make me believe that Morral had been dropped over the side as a trick. A little too tricky,’ said Rollison, and then espied a nurse bearing down on him. ‘It looks as if my time’s up, old chap, is anything else worrying you?’
Grice said: ‘Yes. When did you think of Florence Hardy as the arsenic dispenser?’
‘I went to bed one night thinking of ice-cream and woke up next morning to see her in my mind’s eye, serving the ices out. And I remembered Jolly saying she had insisted on doing that job, a fact which I told you. So I asked Hill to have her and Tips watched thinking they might take flight. They were so sure of themselves, however, that they came to ask my blessing.’
‘What I can’t understand is, that it was Tippets who told us about the arsenic in the ice-cream,’ said Grice.
‘An astute move, once things had gone wrong, and in keeping with his quickness of mind,’ said Rollison. ‘Florence also took a mouthful, so that she could show symptoms. Tips was up to the tricks all right. He punched Lorne in sight of my window, but Lorne did not make a fuss. The reason is clear enough now; Tips could safely do it, being his boss, and wanted to impress me.’
Grice said: ‘But why did Tippets want to kill Katrina? And why didn’t he kill her when she stayed in the next door flat?’
‘He avoided murder for as long as possible,’ Rollison pointed out, ‘but once you and I were on the warpath Katrina was the great danger. Tips couldn’t be sure her loyalty to Derek would stand the strain.’
‘Your time is up, sir,’ murmured the nurse, and glided away.
Rollison rummaged beneath his chair and brought up a large square box wrapped in brown paper. Grice asked what it was as they shook hands, and Rollison laughed.
‘Jolly’s new bowler,’ he said. ‘He’s wearing an old one as penance, and I can’t bear to see it any longer.’

Gideon's Day
Gideon's day is a busy one. He balances family commitments with solving a series of seemingly unrelated crimes from which a plot nonetheless evolves and a mystery is solved. One of the most senior officers within Scotland Yard, George Gideon's crime solving abilities are in the finest traditions of London's world famous police headquarters. His analytical brain and sense of fairness is respected by colleagues and villains alike.
Gideon's Night
On this particular night Commander George Gideon has to deal with a couple of psychopaths who trail pain and blood in their wake. One targets infants, and the other young women on London's foggy streets. There's also an explosive gang war in the offing, and one way or another all of these cases are coming to their breathtaking conclusions at the same time. Can Scotland Yard's finest cope with such a nightmarish scenario, with what would ordinarily be months of time consuming police work crammed into just one night?

Meet the Baron
John Mannering (The Baron) makes his first appearance in this volume. Lord Fauntley cannot help showing off both his daughter and the security under which his precious jewels are kept. The relationship with Lorna Fauntley flourishes, and a series of high profile thefts and adventures ensure Mannering's future, so he believes, until Lorna equates him with The Baron.
