Beth stared at her in disbelief. “Leave it to you to find a bright spot in that awful blaze that ruined so many lives.”

“But ours became better, so it is a bright spot. You can’t deny it.”

The kettle whistled. Alice stood and filled the teapot. “What of the other girls?” she asked over her shoulder.

“I recently received a letter from Lottie. She and Samuel are living on a ranch in Clear Creek, Oregon, and she’s surrounded by cattle.”

Alice laughed. “I’m sure she has much to say about that.”

“No doubt. She said that Leora is doing well although she didn’t know any particulars. And I still haven’t heard from Judith. I’m eager to find out what happened after her groom died.”

“As am I.” Alice lifted the tray and indicated for Beth to return with her to the parlor.

“And although Lessie and Josie went to Utah Territory together,” Beth continued, “Josie wrote and said her new husband had taken her to New Mexico.” Beth pushed open a door so that Alice could enter the sitting room.

“Lessie must be terribly upset,” Alice said.

  “I imagine so.”

Alice set the contents for afternoon tea on a table in the parlor as James and George entered, deep in discussion about fishing for pogies.

Beth settled across from her on the settee. “You must let me help you prepare supper, Alice.”

“I’d be happy for your help, on one condition.”

  Beth watched her expectantly.

  “No cabbage soup.”
