“And now it’s time for a toast from the maid of honor,” The Dj announces. I’ve never hated anyone more than I hate him right now. The microphone is pressed into my hands as I stand up from my seat.
“Good evening. For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Megan Kane. I’m one of Evie’s best friends – no, scratch that – Evie, is my best friend. If you knew me, you’d know that just a few short months ago, no one could have ever imagined me standing up here in front of you today, speaking about love. But that’s what I’m about to do. You see, before I saw Evie with Hunter, I didn’t believe in love. I know. How can I stand up here, at their wedding, and say such a thing? I’ll tell you why. Because it was these two people, right here, who showed me what love is.” I turn and look at Evie and Hunter. “They showed me that love is kindness.” My gaze turns to Gina and Brayden. “Love is forgiveness.” Then I switch to Trevor. “Most of all, love is admitting when you’re wrong. May we all find a love like theirs.” I raise my glass. “To the new Mr. and Mrs. Hunter and Evelynn Douglas!”
Done with my dreaded speech, I quickly take my seat. Looking over at Evelynn, she’s wiping tears from her eyes as she mouth’s the words ‘I love you’ to me and easily repeat them back because I’ve never had a problem letting my friends know I love them.
“That was moving,” Trevor says, giving me a kiss on the lips. “My turn.” Standing up, Trevor takes the microphone. “Good evening ladies and gents. For those of you who don’t know me, you should, I’m this lovely young bride’s older brother, and the groom is my best friend. Unlike my companion here,” Trevor squeezes my shoulder. “I’ve always been a hopeless romantic because love is a beautiful thing! Am I right?” The crowd cheers and for the first time I realize how charming and charismatic Trevor actually is. “Megan was right. Love is kindness, forgiveness, and admitting when you’re wrong. But I’ll tell you something that she forgot, that the Bible says, love is patient. You can’t force love. It comes in its own time, and when love finally comes around, it will have been well worth the wait.” His eyes are on me, but then he turns to Evie and Hunter. “To my dear friend and my baby sister, may the love between you always be considered, worth the wait.”
The crowd erupts in applause and Trevor whisks Evie onto the dance floor as the Dj announces the father/daughter dance. Glancing around at the white linen covered tables, I see my mother and Buster sitting together across the way. Brooklynn smiles and gives me a little wave. I guess she’s forgiven me for tricking her in Las Vegas.
“So, was there any particular meaning to that little speech you gave?” Trevor asks as he takes his seat next to me.
“Was there any special meaning in yours?”
“You still can’t do it can you?”
“Do what? Tell you I love you? I thought you already knew,” I tease him.
“Come on, Megan. Don’t play with my emotions like that.” Trevor’s face is serious, his heart on his sleeve. Placing a hand on each of his cheeks I look into his kind, light brown eyes.
“I love you, Trevor Duncan Woods,” I tell him, sealing it with a kiss. The breath he was holding, whooshes out of him.
“Good. Now who’s that man sitting next to your mother, that’s been staring at you for the past ten minutes?” He asks.
I look back at my mother’s table to see her holding the man’s hand.
“That’s the man that helped me heal,” I tell him. Trevor looks at me like I’m crazy. “That’s my father.”
“Weird. Your dad looks like that billionaire who owns those hotels out in Las Vegas,” He comments, grabbing my hand and pulling me onto the dance floor.
“He is,” I reply nonchalantly.
Gina and Brayden suddenly whirl by us, and Gina flashes an engagement ring. I smile at her and give her a thumbs up. I guess my little speech hit home as I intended it to. I wonder if it hit home for my parents as well. They had plenty of time to talk things out when I locked them in the hotel’s linen closet, back in Vegas.
“Maybe you should dance with your dad,” Trevor comments, I follow his gaze and see the wistful look in my father’s eyes.
“I will later. Right now I just want to dance with you.”
Trevor smiles at me and bends down, placing a kiss on the tip of my nose.
“You know I love you too, right?”
“Yes, I do now.”
