exhilarating sensation. My arms have goose bumps. A wave of ecstasy washes over me.
Boesch smiles. “Pretty cool, no?”
He holds up the keys. “Let’s check this place out.”
I pick up Gordon’s lantern. Boesch tries keys on the lock until one works. We go in.
We’re on the balcony, looking down over the railing at the pews and the pulpit.
Boesch looks at me and gestures toward the floor one story below us, as if to say, “Ladies first.”
I step away from the railing and hand the lantern to him. He backs up to clear the runway.
I get a short running start, jump, leap off the top of the railing with one foot (like shooting a lay-up in basketball), and spread my angel wings. It’s even better than I anticipated. I glide downward into the pews, my own feathered wings keeping the open air beneath me. My feet are dangling; one sandal falls off and lands in the aisle. I’m floating and it feels wonderful.
I land on one of the pews and step down. Boesch lands near the pulpit.
“Let’s do it again!”
Boesch grins.
Demons outside. Angels inside.
Lovely night for an apocalypse.
