Ghost Fire Page 8

by G. G. Andrew

“Jesus,” Jake repeated. He looked at her with a deeper and weirder expression than he’d ever given any of the many women he’d been with.

  Huh.

Satisfied the strange woman was okay, Lucas turned around and caught another pair of eyes staring at him. They belonged to a very sooty woman sitting on the edge of an ambulance, a blanket wrapped around her shoulders. Her hair was dirty and a chunk was missing on one side. Her eyes were bloodshot. The bridge of her nose was bandaged, and it was obviously broken. She was incredibly beautiful.

He shuffled over to her, his own blanket around his shoulders.

Without saying a word, she scooted over, allowing him to sit beside her. They stared off into the night as Cattleman’s Crossing burned to the ground.

“Hello, I’m Laney Stonewater,” she said.

  “Hello, Laney Stonewater.”

  “I have a strange request.”

  “Okay.”

“I want to spend the night with you.”

He paused. They still hadn’t faced each other. “Is this because you don’t have anywhere else to stay? Because all your money got burned?”

“Yes,” she said. “Also I want to spend the night with you.”

He turned to her. A smile was playing on her lips.

Despite the wild night they’d had, the memory of the way she’d looked and felt and smelled on top of him earlier rushed back to him, and he was half-hard before he spoke again.

“You do realize I have a hard time saying no to you, don’t you?” he asked.

“I’m counting on it,” she said.

He cupped her face then. The fire had marked her, like it’d marked him. But under the soot was her skin, and under the smell of ash was the scent of sweet roses. He’d bathe her in his tub back home to bring her back. A few times if necessary.

Tilting her head gently so he didn’t hurt her bruised nose, he put his face close to hers, his lips just grazing her cheek.

“You know, a cool front is coming this week,” he said, his voice gruff with emotion. “The winters here in Dallas are mild. Low chance of snow and even less chance of evil spirits.” He brushed a thumb across her lips. “You could stay longer than a night.”

Her sigh was audible, but then she put her lips to his—softly, but in an answer that left no room for interpretation.

“I believe I could,” she finally said.
