“Or mine,” Darius agreed.
Everyone else nodded in agreement with Dearra’s description. It was quite the puzzle, but it was one they were sure they could work out. Tabitha knew better, but would not have argued with them, even if she were able.
There was a bad moment when the conversation broke up and both Logan and Darius moved to pick Tabitha up and take her in the house. Logan veered away instead and went to open the door for Darius. She thought maybe her father had missed it, but then she heard his subtle growl and knew better.
They would spend a few days here, and then they would go, although where was still foggy. Some of them, at least, would go to Parsaia to find Holly and Brint and bring them back. Brin said that he had some ideas about the prophecy, but he wanted to sleep on it first.
Tabitha was not afraid anymore. She was ready. Whatever tomorrow would bring, it couldn’t be any worse than what she had already come through, could it? When it came down to it, it didn’t matter. There was no going back, so she would go forward.
Epilogue
“Grandmother!” one of the older boys complained. “You can’t stop there!”
“But I can,” she said, moving the easel that held the map out of her way. She stooped to pick up the questions that had piled up on a large rock as she told the tale. She would take them with her, look them over, and answer them at the next class, or, if they were of a private nature, she would talk to the students individually.
The class uttered a collective groan. The boy who had spoken did so again, electing himself to speak on their behalf. “But what happened next? You stopped right in the middle of everything!”
“I stopped,” she said as she turned towards him, “precisely where I was meant to. Life tends to go like that, you know. Sometimes everything around you is chaos and excitement, and other times there are pauses, times when all is still, and it is as if the world were taking a deep breath in preparation for the next thing. That is where our story is now, in one of those quiet, in-between times.”
The boy sighed in exasperation. Clearly, he didn’t appreciate her answer, but he could probably tell she would not be persuaded to go on, and no amount of complaining from him was going to help his cause.
“Grandmother is right,” Grandfather said. “She usually is, and if you ever doubt it, you can ask her and she will tell you it is so.”
Grandmother rolled her eyes, but Grandfather noticed she did not dispute what he'd said.
“You can’t always have everything you want all at once,” she said to the class in general. “Waiting and learning to wait is part of life, part of growing up, and part of becoming an adult. It is as much a part of our lesson as the story is.”
There was some grumbling, and Grandfather turned to the child who dared interrupt Grandmother. “You have something to add?” he asked brusquely.
She flushed, but tipped her chin up defiantly when she spoke. “I was only saying that I know plenty of grownups, and they don’t seem a whole lot better at waiting than we are; they just keep it to themselves better.”
Grandfather laughed. “You may be right, child. Go then, and practice hiding your impatience. Tomorrow, we will begin again.”
