Age of Night Book One to Three Page 28

Flipping her to her hands and knees, he entered her painfully slowly from behind, relishing the feeling of her around him.

Damn, that ass. One glance at it, and he was pounding like his life depended on it; for all he knew, it just might. She met his hips, taking him hard and fast. The sound of their breathing, and the slap of his legs and balls hitting her, surrounded them until they fell off the edge together.

  “Coveney?”

  “Mh?”

“You do know my brother’s room’s next door, right?”

He laughed nervously. “Ah, hell. At least my last night on earth was pleasant.” She chuckled against his chest.

  “Coveney?”

  “Hm?”

“You know, that thing you said before, in Rome…”

Ah, shit. He knew she was going to bring it up eventually. He kissed her perky little nose and told her, “Don’t worry. I’m aware it’s completely insane to feel that way after… five days, was it? You don’t have to say it back.”

“I know I don’t have to,” Ava said. Then she left it at that. For so long he’d actually started breathing again when she added, “But I still love you, too.”

  Meanwhile

  Christine

Hanging up, Christine beamed at everyone, announcing, “They’re all coming back. No one’s hurt. They didn’t even need to fight, so it’s basically turned into an Italian holiday.”

Vivicia, who’d stayed longer than she ever did to make sure they had enough fighters protecting the pride in Coveney, Ava, Ace and Rye’s absence, rolled her eyes, muttering, “Typical.”

Christine couldn’t blame her. A few days in Rome would have been a lot of fun, but she never resented her position. It was an important one, although some people didn’t think so. The pride understood it. Whenever she spent a few days away, they all treated her like a long-lost sister at her return.

They were a kick-ass, flamboyant, dominant bunch. She didn’t feel the need to try to prove she was better than anyone. She didn’t need to fight, either, although she could and would defend herself.

Christine was a submissive, and proud of it, too. Proud of loving and caring for her pridemates. She got up earlier than most to get their breakfast ready. She spent more time with the children than any of the others. Although she was twenty-eight, she was basically their mom. Except she got paid more than your average Manhattan executive.

She wasn’t a maid. They had a cleaner coming in every other day and they actually alternated the cooking duties - most of them had their turn, although they generally begged Ian to do it more often than the others. The man was a damn gourmet chef.

Breakfast was her domain because she loved it. It was the one time they really felt like a big, boisterous family.

  “Mama,” Lola called.

She’d taken to calling all the females Mama, since she’d started spending time with other kids in Lakesides. Because they had mothers and she didn’t understand why she didn’t have one, no one minded, least of all Christine. Beaming at her, she held her up in her arms and asked, “What is it, Lola bear?”

“There’s a doggy in the garden.”

She turned, frowning. Dogs didn’t generally get close to shifters, let alone wild cat shifters.

The garden was completely empty, but she carried on watching past it, towards the trees behind their walls. Her eyes flashed, and she held on to Lola a little tighter.

She wasn’t a fanciful child, which made her words all the more alarming.

There were plenty of wolves in the world and some wanted to take Lola from them.

The wolf watched them curiously. His attention had been focused on the child, first, but now she’d caught his eye, the redheaded female holding her seemed positively mouth-wateringly fascinating.

Hunter should have left then. He’d promised himself he’d only catch a glance.

But his wolf and he both decided they weren’t going anywhere just yet.
