Connor stood confidently, the nerves that had haunted him all week gone as he waited for Jules to arrive. Natalie, John and their son, Tyler, stood next to me. Connor’s parents were across the courtyard talking to Jake’s parents. Carly chatted with Wade, and Danny stood quietly next to Connor, watching her. They continued to work on their relationship, but the distance between them seemed to grow, instead of disappear.
“They’re coming,” the young waiter whispered to us as stepped out of sight. I took a deep breath, eager to see Jules’ face when she saw Connor. This was her dream proposal. Family and friends gathered to witness and celebrate the moment. It was both public and intimate, and utterly perfect for Jules.
Jake walked up with Jules on his arm, stealing my breath as I saw him in his tuxedo. He’d been the one to pick up Jules, having her believe they were attending a fancy police fundraiser I couldn’t attend.
Her eyes found Connor immediately, and Jake let her go as she walked toward him, having eyes only for one another. He came around to me, sliding his arm around my waist as I leaned against him.
Connor took Jules’ hands as he bent down on one knee.
“Jules, you are the woman I wish to spend my life with. You’re the moon that reflects my light even when its dark. You are strong, beautiful, loving. Every day I have with you is a blessing, one I thank God for every moment I breathe. Life may not always be easy, but there is no one I would rather spend it with than you. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”
Love shone on his face as he stared at her, and she smiled, radiant in his love.
“Yes, Connor. I would love to be your wife.”
He took the ring from the box, sliding it on her finger. We clapped, sniffles all around as she kissed him. The music changed, and I laughed. Trust Connor to take me literally.
They swayed together, and I twisted around, wrapping my arms around Jake’s neck.
“You are my sunshine?” he asked, one eyebrow raised quizzically.
“Jules told me once that Connor was the sun to her moon. I might have told him that.”
“So, he decided their engagement song should be, ‘You are my Sunshine’?”
“Apparently.”
“Huh, guess it works.”
“It’s a good song.”
We swayed to the music, the stars twinkling above as other couples joined us.
“I love you. I don’t know if I can ever say those words enough.”
“You can try.” I smiled at him, my fingers tangling in the hair at his collar. “I’ll never grow tired of hearing them.”
“Whatever the future holds, we’ll face it together. I promise.”
I tucked my head into his shoulder, grateful I’d survived. A smile curled on my lips as I remembered the sight of our son. I glanced around at the people gathered together and knew this was the beginning, and the man holding me was my future.
