As he spoke, I could see by the look in their eyes that they did not believe him. They had no intention of backing down or listening to reason. I knew with certainty that the only way we would leave Shade tonight, was if blood was shed. Realising this, that power I’d grown accustomed to feeling within me, seeped into my hands, and bled into my fingertips. My hands began to shake so violently, it became impossible for me to hold my guns. Fearing that I might drop them, I lowered my arms and placed them back into the holsters strapped to my thighs. Seeing this, Clarabelle looked at me alarmed. I knew what she was thinking. Now was the wrong time to put away my guns. Wouldn’t I be needing them? But I knew deep down that the power deep within me had grown so strong, I no longer needed guns to protect myself or my friends. Just like Clarabelle was going to, I was going to seek the help of the monster that now lurked inside of me.
Rush spoke up. “What you say just doesn’t make sense. The vampires didn’t have to wait almost twenty years to kill us, there are only a handful of us living here in Shade. The vampires could have killed us at any time if they had really wanted to.”
“They aren’t interested in your pathetic band of wolves here in Shade,” I said, my hands shaking – fingers twitching – uncontrollably at my sides. It is the wolves that are gathering across the sea in Europe that pose the real threat to the vampires. That’s who they are planning to attack, with my help.”
Flint, who stood alongside, glanced at me, and hissed, “Shut up, Mila. Don’t say another word!”
With guns raised before her, and aimed directly at me, Rea took a step forward. With a sly smile, she said, “So if what you say is true and the vampires only want Mila back to lead an army against the wolves – wherever they might be – I might as well kill her right now.”
As if time had been slowed down to a crawl, I saw Rea press down on the triggers of her guns. I saw two flashes of bright white light followed by two bullets speeding toward me. In that same fraction of a second, I raised my arms and extended my fingers. Screwing my eyes shut tight, I willed that energy to blast from my fingertips and obliterate Rea. But I felt nothing. No fizz or spark of magic. Zilch. Zip. Zero.
Opening my eyes, I looked down the length of my arms and at my hands. To my horror, I couldn’t see any magic flowing from them. All I could see were the two bullets that Rea had fired from her guns about to thunder into my skull. I felt an explosion of pain in my head. My feet lifted off the ground and I went flying backwards through the air as the world went black.
There was suddenly no light.
No sound.
Nothing.
