  Chapter One

Faeswyn’s heart was racing inside of her chest as she paced back and forth on the front porch. Glywyn stood by the door, staring out onto the landscape beyond with the same look of fear on her face as Faeswyn. Faeswyn nodded, glancing over to Glywyn. “Okay, thank you, Glaeonawyn. Yes”—she nodded again—“we’ll let you know.” She took a deep breath, went over to Glywyn, and put her arm around her.

  “Well?” Glywyn asked her.

“Glaeonawyn says she just saw Theoch mist from the field by the road of her property. He should be back here”—a thin mist appeared next to them—“now.”

Theoch had a look of concern on his face. “Glaeonawyn was right. I saw it. A royal transport heading hell bent in this direction.”

“Shit. Shit,” said Glywyn. “Draedon! Where’s Draedon?”

Draedon ran up the side steps of the front porch. “I saw the dust trail coming down the road. Whoever it is, they’re coming fast.”

Faeswyn’s eyes widened. “Okay. Okay. The farm is glamoured. Um, Draedon and Theoch, since it only lasts for about twenty minutes, I’ll wait until we see the car from here. Glywyn,” she said, turning to stare at her. “Hide.”

“Hide? Try glamouring me again,” said Glywyn.

“It doesn’t work,” said Faeswyn. “All of this,” she said, motioning to Glywyn’s expanding belly, “is preventing my glamour from working on you. Hide.”

“Hide, baby,” Draedon said, pulling her to his body as he kissed her lovingly.

Theoch hugged her in turn, kissing her tenderly before caressing his hand over her belly. “Hide.”

Faeswyn took her by the hand, walking with her to the hidden closet they’d installed in the bedroom downstairs, specifically for hiding her. “Stay in here until we come to get you. You hear?” Glywyn nodded, and got into the closet. “Um, turn to the side, sweetie, so I can close the door.”

“I can’t. We should have made it a little bigger. I’m seven months, Faeswyn. This is all I’ve got.”

“Okay. Just…suck in, and be still.” She closed the door on Glywyn, but then opened it again, hugging her close. “It’ll be all right. Love you.”

  “Love you.”

Faeswyn ran back out onto the porch. The car could be seen racing down the dirt road toward the house. Faeswyn closed her eyes and glamoured the three of them. D
raedon was an older man, with long graying hair in a ponytail, and a scruffy beard. Theoch was a tall thin man with yellowing teeth, short brown hair, and a limp. Of course, she stood by her standard mousy haired young woman, with pimples, limp hair, and unibrow. Together they look like any ordinary Drisian farming family.

The car skidded to a stop in front of the house, and a tall, muscled man almost fell out of the driver’s side. Faeswyn knew she shouldn’t have been concentrating on how good the man looked, but when she saw a good looking man, some things were just evident. His hair was flowing down his back as he rushed over to the other side of the car.

“Please, help us,” he said, opening the passenger side door, and pulling another man out.

Faeswyn saw the man’s bloody crotch as the driver tried in vain to hold him up. She looked at Draedon and Theoch, shrugging her shoulders. They went to help the man, bringing him into the house, and dragging him down the hall to the bedroom. He was too tall to carry, and in too much pain to walk himself, only semi-conscious at the time. They dropped the man on the bed as he made a sick mewling sound.

“They attacked us,” the other man said. “I’ve never seen glaon fairies attack like that. Help him, please.”

  “Who are you?”

The man stood at attention. “I’m Naihr, son of Ghalguod of the Teveoch royal guard. That’s my friend and fellow guard, Draeis, son of Veldulinahr.”

“A glaon fairy got to his…Um…” Faeswyn only shrugged, and without being able to think of another word, she said, “Dick?”

Naihr nodded. “He’s bleeding to death. I didn’t know what to do. I just couldn’t leave him there.”

Faeswyn rushed down the hall to the bathroom, grabbing as many towels as she could. Draedon was hot on her heals. “What the hell are you doing?”

“He’s going to die in there if we don’t do something.” She gathered up towels, and took strange bottles from a cabinet in the corner.

“We don’t even know what they were doing out here,” Draedon whispered. “What if they’re looking for us?”

Faeswyn stopped, taking a deep breath. She nodded. “Okay. Then you better ask him, cuz I’m not about to watch that man die on that bed.” Draedon nodded as they walked back into the room.

“Um…” Faeswyn said, glancing over to Theoch. Their glamour was about to wear off, so she would have to talk fast if she was going to help the man. “First off, we aren’t like this.” She shook her head and tried again. “I mean, we don’t look like this. So if you want us to help, you better not freak out.” She closed her eyes, and released the glamour on Draedon, Theoch, and herself.

Naihr gasped, and pulled out his tracer just as Theoch pulled out the one he kept tucked in the small of his back. “You’re glaon! What the fuck?”

Faeswyn held her hands out in front of her as the man in bed made a pitiful sound. “No. No, I’m not. I’m not glaon. I’m Mocmoran. A vaedra.”

Naihr frowned at her. “You’re Glywyn, clan of Glaerd? The one we were commanded to kill on sight?”

“Oh, fuck this!” Draedon said, pulling out the tracer he had.

“Everyone, just calm the fuck down!” Faeswyn shouted to them all. “There is a man dying on the bed right now. Can we focus?”

Naihr stared curiously at Theoch. “You’re Commander Theoch. You’re alive.” He looked over at Draedon. “So you must be Draedon, son of Gaeldos.”

Neither Draedon nor Theoch said a word. They only kept their guns trained on the two men. “Draedon, I need you to go into the kitchen and boil some scalding hot water,” Faeswyn said. Draedon didn’t move, but holstered his gun as he continued to stare at Naihr. “Please?”

“Go get the water, Draedon!” Glywyn said from the closet.

Faeswyn stared dejectedly up at the ceiling. “You can come out of the closet now, Glywyn.” Glywyn opened the closet door, then waddled over to stand by Theoch. “That’s Glywyn, clan of Glaerd.”

“Well, don’t tell them everything, Faeswyn,” Glywyn said, staring at her incredulously.

“Glywyn, they already know.” Faeswyn cautiously walked around to the side of the bed. “We need to get his pants off. Theoch?”

“Hell, no,” he said with his tracer still pointed at Naihr. “I like this position until I feel it’s safe.”

“We mean you no harm,” Naihr said to him.

“Bullshit.” Theoch sneered. “You just told us you were commanded to kill Glywyn.”

  “We were, but—”

“But nothing! I should put a tracer into your skull right now!” Theoch said, standing up to his full height.

“No one is putting a tracer into anyone! Calm the fuck down!” Faeswyn said, staring at the two men until Theoch sat back down in the chair, continuing to hold the gun on Naihr.

“Naihr, help me get his pants off,” she said.

Naihr started to go over to Draeis, even as Theoch kept the gun pointed at him. He held his hands up to show he wasn’t about to do anything, making Faeswyn glare at Theoch. They gingerly began to pull Draeis’pants of, which was hard since with each movement he would yell out, even half-conscious.

Faeswyn was shocked at what she saw. Draeis’ crotch was a bloody mess. “Ah, shit,” she whispered. “Draedon, where’s the water?”

Draedon walked in carrying a white basin. He sat it down next to the bed. “It’s scalding,” he said with a small smile.

“Listen,” Faeswyn said, standing with her hands on her hips. She stared at Naihr. “There’s extensive damage here. More than I can deal with. Luckily, he’s clotted, so it isn’t bleeding as much.”

“I didn’t know what to do,” Naihr said, “so I just grabbed some dirt and packed it on his wound.”

“Oh,” said Faeswyn. “Okay. Well, it’s going to have to come off, and when it does, it’s going to bleed like a stuck pig. Too much for me. I have to call in a healer.”

“Who?” Naihr started to become flustered. “No. No. No one else can know that we’re here. We’re dead if they know.”

Theoch and Draedon glanced at one another as Faeswyn stared at them both. “Put your guns away. He’s not going to do anything. Are you, Naihr?”

“I just want to make sure Draeis lives. Nothing more,” he said, sitting on the end of the bed dejectedly.

“Okay, then I’m calling Glaeonawyn,” Faeswyn said.

“Glao-who? Is she a fairy?” Naihr said, standing up as if he were about to run out.

“She’s a healer,” said Faeswyn. “And you need to take it down a notch or two before you faint.” Faeswyn went into the living room where she’d thrown the portable Technological Communication Device onto the sofa.

“Glaeonawyn, it’s Faeswyn. We need your help out here. As soon as possible, and please don’t judge when you get here. Bring your bag.” She put the TCD back down on the sofa, and took a deep breath. Walking back into the bedroom, she looked at them all. “I don’t want to remove any of the dirt yet, but I can’t see what’s going on under all of that. Glaeonawyn is coming. She’s going to help your friend, but I’m going to tell you right now, Naihr. If we succeed in helping you and Draeis…If we can save his…junk, he might have a long recovery time. That means you’ll have to stay here.”

  “Faeswyn,” Glywyn said.

“Where the hell else will they go? But,” she said, turning to stare at Naihr again. “I think you owe us all an explanation. I want to hear why you were out where glaon fairies could get you. I want to know about Gaeldos all but putting a hit out on my friends. And if I feel at any time that you mean to do us harm in any way, I’ll not only finish the job the fairies started on your friend, I’ll fuckin’ castrate your ass, too. Got it?”

  Naihr nodded. “Agreed.”

Faeswyn looked around at Draedon, Theoch, and Glywyn with a raised eyebrow. They all nodded. “Good. You look like you have a wound on your hand, Naihr. Let me take a look at it. Fairies can have nasty mouths. You don’t want that thing to get infected.”

  She d
idn’t wait to ask him, but pulled him with her down the hall to the bathroom to clean out his wound. “Thank you,” Naihr said to her.

Faeswyn glanced at him, running water onto his wound. “Don’t thank me yet. He might die. There’s a lot of damage, but Glaeonawyn is amazing. If anyone can help, it’s her.”

Naihr smiled at her with a slight nod. “I’m sure she’ll do her best.”

Faeswyn stared back at him, looking into his eyes. Sexy eyes, she thought. There was an invisible electrical current that she felt between them. He was so tall, so muscled, so…man. Her heart was beating wildly in her chest, and when she smiled at him, his eyes seemed to soften as he looked at her. It was then that she knew… She was too fuckin’ horny to be standing in the bathroom alone with him.

“Okay. I’ll let you finish up here,” she said, leaving him alone in the bathroom, and walking back into the bedroom where she could take her mind off of just how good he looked.

Ten minutes later, Glaeonawyn rushed into the house toting a large bag on her arm. Faeswyn rushed over from where she’d been waiting for her on the sofa. She’d known Glaeonawyn since she’d come to the farm. Not knowing anyone in Quith, she’d felt alone. They became fast friends. It was then that Glaeonawyn told Faeswyn that she was also Mocmoran vaedra. Being much older than Faeswyn, Glaeonawyn became a mother figure to her. She looked forward to seeing the round woman walking into her house like she lived there, and putting on a pot of her special tea. They would sit for hours visiting, and talking about things only another vaedra could understand.

Faeswyn hugged the short, round woman warmly, looking into her striking gray eyes that only showed compassion. Glaeonawyn had the gift of healing. Anytime someone was hurt, they would call for her. She was also the resident midwife.

“So tell me what I’m about to walk in on before I go in there, please,” Glaeonawyn said to her, pushing a random strand of her auburn-chestnut colored hair from her face.

“Two men came to the farm,” she stared cautiously at Glaeonawyn. “They’re royal guards from Teveoch.”

  Glaeonawyn only nodded. “Continue.”

“The tall, muscled one with the eyes”—Faeswyn sighed, she hadn’t meant to, but it kind of escaped her—“he said they were attacked by glaon fairies. His friend, the one that’s in the bed with the smooth chest and all of that black hair—”
