Tegan pushed her way through the door and led us out into the afternoon sunshine. She marched across the dirt road then slipped between some trees. We walked twenty or thirty feet in before she spun around to face us.
Her hands were making quick work of the buttons on her dress. “Do you guys trust me?”
“Yes,” I said without hesitation. It seemed odd to think back to the weeks she’d spent playing queen of darkness. “Just do what you need to do.”
“Think about Earth. Visualize it in your mind. Then push all of your magic into the Earth Stone. I’ll do the rest.” She reached under her shift and dug around. She squirmed and wiggled, then pulled out a small leather pouch. “Emersyn, you’re going to wrap your hands around mine and give me everything you’ve got. The rest of you, link your arms around ours and do not let go.”
Emersyn leapt forward and held her hands out, ready to follow orders. I moved to stand beside Tegan, then wrapped my arm around hers. There was no way I was going to let go. Deacon, Royce, and Henley wrapped their hands around Emersyn’s arms. Cooper took the other side of Tegan.
“All right, pray this works,” Tegan whispered and poured the Earth Stone into her palm. She covered it with her open hand and locked her fingers together. “Emersyn, now.”
Emersyn’s hands flew into position, one on top, the other on the bottom. Her knuckles turned white from how hard she held on. That bright, neon-green light we’d seen in the Seelie tunnels shined through the cracks in their fingers.
Tegan took a deep breath and closed her eyes. “I call upon the Earthen Stone, lend us your Power to send us home.”
The ground rumbled under my feet like an earthquake. I stared at their clasped hands and pushed my magic as hard as I could toward the Stone. I soaked in the smell of the dirt and flowers around me. I embraced the rumble of the ground beneath my feet.
“Roots of Runes and Strength in Soil, catch us up to time’s turmoil.”
Trees swayed around us. Branches trembled and dropped their leaves to the ground.
“Feel our magic from where we stand, to The Coven’s nest upon this land.”
The green light erupted like a firework. It shot out from between their hands and cast everything around us in an emerald glow. The rumble in the ground grew faster and faster until my teeth rattled together and my bones vibrated in my body. Roots from trees shot up from the ground. Dirt and leaves floated into the air and hovered like drones.
“I call upon the Earthen Stone, lend us your Power to send us home.”
Something popped. Then a light exploded around us, and everything went white...
Did the spell work? Will they make it back to modern day Salem? More importantly, will Tegan and Emersyn close the Gap or rip it wide open to claim darkness as their own? My magic doesn’t define me.
Within my secret, ancient race of witches, everyone prays to join the most powerful circle of all—The Coven. Well, everyone except for me. All I want is to discover the truth of the past that was stolen from me. So I lay low, defending the world from demons and training to strengthen my magic.
But when I discover an artifact that can defeat the demons for good, I’m forced to do the one thing I never wanted—claim my rightful place in The Coven so I can hunt down the artifact myself.
I know my success will require sacrifices, but I fear I won’t be able to handle the price…
