by Molly Dox

Twyla broke down. Her body shook. “I don’t know what broke inside of me. I couldn’t take it anymore. Lila and I have been on the outs since Mom died. I was ready to get on with my life, away from here. Only the will kept getting changed. We fought amongst ourselves, with our lawyers, with our father…” She dropped her head. “I thought it was an easy out. Who noticed when an old man dies? He’s eighty, they’d suspect natural causes. I cried for an autopsy, not thinking they’d actually do one on somebody that age. I mean, come on. He was eighty, so I played the part. I figured signing in under my sister’s name, the attention would go to her.”

Sheriff Snyder stood and brushed his hair to the side with his hand five or six times. He shot Libby a glance and shrugged. Libby nodded. They seemed to have made a pact to move forward and forget what had happened. He cleared his throat before speaking. “Twyla Jones, you are hereby being arrested and charged with the murder of your father. You have the right to remain silent….”

  Lila gasped. “How could you?”

Sheriff Snyder turned to Lila. “Lila Jones, you hereby are being arrested and charged with the attempted murder of your father.”

They were the talk of the town – identical twins, double-crossing each other, and each found guilty of a crime. It would make national news when word got out. Usually, little things that happened in the small, out-of-the-way town never made the television news. This time it would be splashed all over.

  Chapter 11

When Ryan Nolan walked through the door at The Breakfast Nook, everything fell silent. Even Myrtle, known for always having her mouth in motion said nothing. All eyes turned toward the stranger.

Ryan got that a lot. He tried not to let it go to his head. Maybe it was his pearly, white smile. Maybe it was his ample, bulging muscles, or maybe not…but probably.

Gloria picked up her jaw off the floor.

Viola swiveled to get a better look, and Patsy simple sighed.

Libby introduced herself, while Owen shook his head seeing the reactions of the women. He used to get reactions like that a long time ago. Okay, maybe not for a good twenty years, but still.

“Hey, I’m Ryan Nolan, the new post master,” he started.

Libby laughed. “For some reason, I think there’s going to be a long line at the post office this week.”

“I hear you make a good breakfast,” he said, settling down at the counter.

Rosie didn’t hear him. She barely noticed he walked in the door. She only had eyes for Dr. Jeff Tucker who was simply holding her hand across the counter.

  “So dinner tonight?”

  “I’d like that,” she answered.

And just like that, things got back to normal in the little town of Spring Valley, Pennsylvania. Or did they?
