“It is you.” My lips chanted, as I quickly ran up to the car pulling the passenger side door open. “Don’t say shit bitch. Just drive.”
I hoped in the car shutting the door behind me as I whisked my .45 from behind my back. The thin woman inside was shaken by my sudden presence in her space. Her fear only fueled my anger even more. I wanted to feed off of that shit like a vulture on a dead carcass. She was the whole reason my life spiraled out of control in the first place. I was blissfully happy until she came along and uprooted my husband from our happy marriage. If it weren’t for her, none of this shit would have ever happened. She drove on as the light changed headed in the direction of the expressway. She was going home, to my fucking house.
“Where’s your fucking baby bump? I thought you were pregnant with my husband’s son.” I probed, setting the gun on my lap.
“I don’t have it.” Her words were solemn and low pitched.
“What bitch? Speak up before I pop a bullet in your ass.”
“I said I lost it. Well, I didn’t actually lose it. I got rid of it.” Her lips smirked a bit as if she was no longer fearful of my attendance.
“You had an abortion? You never wanted him or his baby. The only thing you ever wanted from him was his money.” I sat back in total shock.
“No, not really. I did love Major. He was just a very controlling man,” Jessica fingered her hair back behind her right ear. “But I’m sure I didn’t have to tell you that. I never wanted the baby. He figured it would be a good way to get rid of you. But I could never say no to him.”
“So you helped him to get out of his marriage.”
“Yeah. He said he couldn’t see himself giving me everything I ever dreamed of without getting rid of you. It was crazy though. He said you were so possessive over him that you would never leave unless you knew it was official.” She paused checking the shock value in my expression. “So I got pregnant. But when I heard he was dead…”
“You jumped for fucking joy.” I shook my head in disbelief.
I couldn’t even be mad at her anymore. She was nothing but another one of Major’s victims in his cheating chess game. She was only doing what he told her to do with the promise of riches beyond her wildest dreams. Yeah, I did a background check on her after the insurance man had told me she had everything. She came from a dirt poor family in South Carolina. She wasn’t even from Chicago. She was just here trying to stamp a career in landing the wealthiest man to take care of her. Jessica met a lot of those waitressing at Gibsons Bar and Steakhouse downtown where all of the businessmen did lunch.
The ride went on with an unnerving silence. Minutes later we pulled in front of my old home. Its beauty was even more immeasurable than before. Having not seen it in a while, it looked as if it looked better. Either that or my heart had grown fonder for it. The time read 6:45am on the clock on her IPhone sitting in cup holder. Jessica cut the car off and removed the keys from the ignition. I gaped at the side of her face as she focused her attention on the lawn in front of her. I could tell she was anticipating my next move, wondering if I was going to put the gun to her head and pull the trigger right there.
“What do you want form me, Bonnie?” Jessica finally spoke, shoving the keys in my hands. “Do you want the car? You can have it. You want me to cut you a check? I’ll write it. Just please don’t shoot me.”
“Shut up. I don’t want anything from you. You played a pivotal part in fucking up my life. I have no remorse or sympathy for you.” I tossed them back to her as she flinched then clenched my piece in my hands. “Now get the fuck out the car.”
“Please. I’m begging you.”
“Shut up and get the fuck up the stairs, Jessica.”
I walked like death was on my back towards the steps I used to call my own. She fumbled through her keys, trying to open the door with the right one. It was unnerving that she felt the need to act so terrified thinking that kind of shit was going to persuade me to save her life. She dropped them to the ground irritating me even more as I looked around making sure no neighbors were being nosey. I pressed the barrel of the gun into her back for her to put a rush job on opening it before I blew her small intestines into the door instead.
“There is something that I haven’t told you though, Bonnie.” She whispered as the key finally made it in the hole, turning the knob.
“What’s that?”
“I have a husband too…and he’s a cop.”

“What?” I didn’t have time to react as I stumbled when she grabbed my hand pulling me into the house roughly.
“Baby. Baby,” Jessica called out as she ran towards the living room.
From around the corner came a bald dark skinned physically fit tall man with only his plaid cotton boxers on. He held a beer in his hand and immediately went for his gun that was sitting on the island counter not eight feet away from him. I rose from the floor running out of the corridor before he could even lay a finger on it, aiming my piece right for his skull. He could’ve given me a reason to end his life early but instead he backed up raising his hands in surrender.
“Alright. Let’s all be cool here.” He grinned.
“This is your husband, eh? So you were married and fucking around with a married man.” My lips quivered with fury. “Did you know your wife was fucking my husband?”
“Yeah,” he responded looking casually at her, cowering mildly next to him. “We planned it.”
“Excuse me?”
“I guess you’re as naïve as he said you were. Yeah, Jess and I play those old rich niggas for money and when he came along talking about kids and marriage and shit, we knew we had struck gold. That jerk was so in love with her that he couldn’t see that she was playing him so cold.” He laughed like he was telling a stand-up comedy joke.
“But what were you going to do if he didn’t die? You were just going to marry him and live life like a bigamist?” I asked turning to her.
“It was simple, honey. When your husband’s a cop, anyone can disappear just like that and any way you want them to. Since Major needed to be found for the life insurance’s sake, we made it very public. You were never supposed to make it out of that car alive.” Her cower turned sinister very quickly, like she had been playing me all along just to keep me from shooting her. “Leon here knew an old trucking buddy who was more than willing to do the job for $40,000. I had just delivered him the money this morning when you jumped in the car.”
“You planned to kill us and take our money,” the smirk on my face was actually anger unable to release itself in any other form.
“Then you and your little boyfriend went on a killing spree with the officers who took him down and so we knew that you would be outta the way real soon.” Leon slurred as he readjusted his shorts.
“Wait, wait. What’s your name again? Leon Steel?”
“None of that is relevant right now. Your boyfriend is dead. I got word from my peeps on that. So the only thing that matters is the fact that this place will be swarming with feds ready to take you down or take you to jail, whichever you choose.” The smug look on his face could have easily been shot off.
“You selfish son of a bitch. Both you killed for greed and you both will fucking rot in hell for it. And, you killed that little girl while your disgusting friends raped her.” I was beyond appalled by the satisfied expressions adorning their faces.
“I can't believe you're here actually, but I knew it was only a matter of time before you found me." Jessica flipped her hair. “You want some wine before you go to jail honey?”
I studied her every move as she did mine. Leon’s cop issued Glock was sitting on the counter and there was no way I was taking my eyes off of it. Whoever reached for it was getting two to the dome and one to the heart. Jessica went to the fridge pulling out a chilled bottle of White Zinfandel and grabbed a large wine glass from the cupboard. Leaning back against the
counter, she poured a tall glass taking small sips along the way to replenish. I was utterly confused. She had all of a sudden taken charge of the situation when I was the one pointing the gun. They were silent the entire time. I was done talking and with the sirens becoming apparent in the distance, there wasn’t much left to talk about.
"So how do you know my husband?" Jessica finally muttered twiddling her fingers.
“He raped and killed my ex-boyfriend’s little girl.” I sneered.
“Naw, naw. Now I may have put a bullet in her head but I never fucking touched her.” He huffed. “I know it don’t make it any better but it had to be done. It was the only way.”
“You know what, fuck all this. I just want to know one thing before I kill the both of you.” I didn’t really want to ask but I something inside of me compelled me to. "Did he love you?"
"I know he loved this." Jessica smacked her ass casually. “Listen honey, I know how you must feel. But he was very happy in his last few months because of me. He only stayed with you to spare your gullible feelings.
“Why didn’t you come to his funeral if you all had a thing?” I asked becoming further enraged with every answer she provided.
“Because honey he was only my dip and money bag. Shit, I left all the wifey crap to you girl. I was playing my own wifey thing here as you can see.”
“Yeah and you’re sure doing a bang up job of that, ain’t ya?” Leon sucked his teeth sarcastically.
My blood boiled from the way he put her down. She was no saint but I knew it wouldn’t be like that if it weren’t for him. Every time he spoke to her she would look down at her feet. It was as if a piece was being burned away from her self-esteem each time he spoke to her like she was trash. My finger squeezed the trigger, hugging it tightly with each round that I buried into him. I could no longer hold it in. The smug look on his face was still apparent as three bullets burrowed into his body. Leon fell back against the wall then slid down to the floor, gasping begging for air. I lowered my hand looking up into Jessica’s horrified watery eyes.
“Baby.” Jessica kneeled to his side. “It’s okay baby. It’s gonna be okay.”
“Stop crying over him. I just saved you from a lifetime of grief and heartache. See you and I, we’re not that different from each other. We both let the love for a man overshadow our love for ourselves. That shits gonna stop right here and right now.” I felt lightheaded, struggling to hold my composure.
“You have no idea. I have struggled to love this man all of my life. We went to middle school together. He made me a paper rose with our names written in the center. My last name was changed to his, like we were already married.” She spoke softly gazing down at him taking his last breath as tears gently fell from her eyes. “We’ve been together ever since.”
“Yeah well. Now you can stop being a doormat for him. Worry about your own life and since you’ve got my husband’s money, you can start doing more good than harm to others. Stop whoring yourself for money,” I laughed.
“Right.”
“Meanwhile, I’ll need some dough to keep me quiet about this little scheme of yours. Not much. Just enough to get me out of the country and living on easy street for a couple of years.” I sighed, watching as she still pined over her husband’s dead body. “I’ll also need you to call off the goon squad that’ll be arriving any second now.”
“Right. Right.”
She stood rubbing the blood from her fingers onto her jeans and white baby doll blouse. Her hands trembled as she looked around at the scene. I could tell she was scared, nervous about what she was going to do next. She probably couldn’t function without someone bellowing in her ear twenty four hours a day. I knew that feeling all too well. It was hard for me to function when Major was completely written out of my life. But I quickly got over it, since it was something that I had desired for so long. It was all still fresh to Jessica. Eventually she would get over it. In time her heart will heal enough to realize that she was much better off without him.
“I need to just get my check book,” She quavered, looking puzzled as to whether or not it was safe for her to move.
“Naw, I can’t use a check. I need cash in hand. You’re gonna have to go to the bank later and make a hefty withdrawal.” I moved slowly over to her. “Don’t worry, as long as you keep your word, I’ll keep mine.”
“And what’s your word, Bonnie?”
“That I’m not going to murder you as long as you don’t wrong me.” I looked over snatching the gun from the counter tucking it down in the back of my pants. “That’s just so you don’t get any funny ideas.”
I winked at her, watching as she returned the favor. Her eyes were still filled with water, constantly feeling sorrowful for her dead husband lying stiffly behind her. She walked back towards the counter slowly snatching up her glass of wine and guzzling it, taking it to the back of her throat. The feds were here now. I could hear them getting their setup together outside to come in and take me down. But I knew this house like the back of my hand. They would never find me in the attic as long as I used the part with the hidden door in my old bedroom. I could hide out in there for while they searched the house from top to bottom and they would be none the wiser. It was the perfect plan. It was flawless.
Making sure that Jessica was straight, I headed to the front window looking out to see over three dozen cops outside ready to bulldoze this house for little ol’ me. It was quite the spectacle they were making only to be disappointed from not finding me. I wasn’t even going to tell Jessica where the spot was for fear that she might dime me out. My palms were sweaty coupled with a massive lump in the back of my throat. A helicopter could be heard hovering overhead, ready to get the news’ prize shot for the midday broadcast. They were more than prepared to take me down. Stupid motherfuckas. They were never going to catching me.
“This is for Leon.” Jessica aimed another cop issued Glock, one that she must have had hidden somewhere and shot me right in the shoulder.
“You stupid bitch.” My lips curled as I dropped the gun, struggling to pick it up with my other hand. But she shot me again.
“You shouldn’t have come here.” Jessica shot me again in the stomach.
“I only wanted to help your bum ass.” I could feel blood filling my lungs. “You weak bitch.”
“You’re the weak bitch. You wouldn’t know loyalty if it bit you in the ass.” She winced calmly as we listened to the loud banging at the front door. “My love ran that deep for him. For Leon. You’ll never know that kind of love.”
I was bleeding to death on the floor of what used to be my life. She moved closer to me taking Leon's gun from out of my jeans. I coughed up blood as she disappeared out of sight for a few seconds. Jessica reappeared just in time to see the feds ransack the door and barge their way in. I could feel life slipping away from me, while she stood there claiming self-defense and alerting them to the fact that I had shot and killed a cop. As the paramedics immediately began working on me, I caught a glimpse of Jessica turned sideways. I couldn't help but notice a small but very visible baby bump. She lied. That bitch had indeed played a good game of chess. A game that I had indisputably lost. My lips curled up into the broadest smile imaginable, as I felt that I was about to take my last breath. Death was near and it was nothing magical, only a cold breezy darkness that forced me to close my eyes.
