The Attraction of Adeline Page 21

He palmed the back of her head. “Dare I ask?” he said, lowering his lips until they were mere inches from hers.

“If you ask me to do a sleepover with you tonight, I’m going to say yes.”

  Epilogue

  “Adie.”

Adeline glanced up when she heard her name being spoken in that deep, sexy voice that even after six months of marriage still made her knees go weak. “Hey you,” she said, giving Jack a tired but happy smile. She’d been up since three a.m. and at Dottie’s Delights since four, baking. She’d announced on social media last night that they’d be open today, and the preorders came pouring in immediately. She’d had to shut them down after an hour.

“I’ve been standing in line for twenty minutes just to get through the front door,” Jack said, tossing her a look that had her anticipating things to come.

“You could have slipped in the back door,” Adeline pointed out.

“What, and miss out on the chance to listen to everyone talk about how incredible this bakery is and how they got up early just to come and stand in line to get one of your delicacies? No way.”

“We’re now out of Dottie cakes,” Hazel said loudly so those waiting in line would know and not be disappointed when they got to the counter. The word started filtering through the line from those inside to those outside. Hazel was a hot-to-trot eighty-year-old who unofficially worked for Adeline. Hazel owned a small percentage of the dance studio where Jack and Adeline met the night she fell off the stripper pole. Adeline met Hazel when she and Jack took dance lessons before their wedding from Maggie Oliver, the major owner of the dance studio. The one with the pink tips in her hair. The dance lessons were an engagement gift from Kinley.

“Have you sold out of Jack’s Almost Better Than Sex banana bread?” Jack asked Adeline.

“That was gone within the first thirty minutes. One guy was heard saying, this shit is better than any sex I’ve ever had. Jack’s one lucky bastard.”

“I agree. I am.” Jack had made partner but not branch partner. Mr. Carpenter was so impressed with how he stood up to him that he moved Jack into a partnership position within the executive branch. His plan was to position Jack to someday be managing partner.

Adeline glanced at the small table sitting in the corner of her shop. There was a tea kettle sitting on the table and three pink china cups. The sign hanging from the ceiling above the table proclaimed: Dottie’s Spot. “She was here again this morning.”

Jack looked perplexed. He always looked perplexed when Adeline talked about Dottie’s presence in her bakery. “Was the light on when you got here?”

Adeline took her pink chef’s hat off. “Yep, and the water in the kettle was hot.”

Jack shook his head. He didn’t want to believe it, but the evidence was too in-your-face to ignore. “I’m glad she watches over you. Is here to see your success.”

Adeline gave him a watery smile. “Me, too.” Dottie died thirty minutes after Adeline brought Jack to the hospital to officially meet her. Together, they told Dottie of their plans. She’d been happy for them and made them promise to keep an eye on Alice.

“Oh my fucking hell,” said a pissed off female voice.

Adeline and Jack turned to see the problem. Debbie. She’d finally made it to the entry. Ten customers to go and she’d be at the register.

“Hi Debbie,” Jack said. “I waited forever myself.”

Adeline gave her a nod and went back behind the counter to get Debbie’s order.

“I can’t believe Mr. Carpenter insists I stand in line and bring in treats from here every freaking time it opens. We have a perfectly good bakery around the corner from us. And I’ve never been the one expected to pick up workroom treats.”

Adeline took the box of Dottie Cakes and a box of assorted pastries off the preorder rack. She set it on the counter by the register. “This is for Debbie.”

“Do you want me to ring it up ahead of those in front of her?” Hazel asked.

“Make her wait,” Adeline whispered in her ear. Adeline turned and glanced at Jack. “Sweetie, can I get you to help me in the backroom?”

Jack gave her a wolfish grin. “I thought you’d never ask.”
