Her hand jerked away. Her heart jolted in her chest. The cold went away again as embarrassment rushed heat across her skin. He was talking to someone else. Murmuring. What if he was with another woman? She knew he was single. She knew he lived alone.
What she didn’t know was if some other woman had gotten to him first.
The boards beneath her feet vibrated. Footsteps. Two sets. Thinking to dash past her neighbor and his companion and get away as quickly as possible, Stacy ducked out from beneath the galley’s overhang.
And there he was, half-turned to talk to that someone behind him.
Ryan Beausoleil. Lean, dark-haired, Ryan Beausoleil. He had the wide shoulders and the broad back of a man who worked for a living. Not a man who chicken-pecked at a keyboard or who counted beans for a paycheck, but a man who worked with his body. His glorious, manly, made-her-itch-to-go-out-on-limb-body. She took another step toward him—or more precisely, toward escape—her heel hitting the deck with a decided clack.
His head whipped toward her. His dark eyes zeroed onto her face. He went still.
She did too, because as Ryan’s companion came around from behind him, she saw it wasn’t a woman, but another man, wearing a dirty ballcap. And before whatever that made her feel could register, Ryan’s friend pulled something from the front of his pants and pointed it straight at Stacy. A scream formed, but her throat clamped tight, holding back its release.
Ryan’s friend was pointing a gun at her. A big, black, scary gun.
